blue slash mark in timeline

Postby hpharley90 » Sat Dec 10, 2011 12:33 pm

I'm just starting to use PE10. I've been using PE2.0.
I have these blue slash marks in my time line.I didn't have them when I first put clips on the timeline and now I do after trying to learn how to copy and paste a piece of audio. ](*,)
It's not like it was in PE2.0. I don't know how to use the video and audio tracks being paired as they are in PE10.
What is wrong? Video is from my Canon HV40.

Those are indications that you've applied a Smart Trim. Those are optional deleting zones. (I explain this all in my books, if you're interested.)

You can delete this segment or choose to override it by clicking on each indicated area.

Or you can just turn off Smart Trim by clicking on the magic scissors button along the top left of the Timeline panel.

Yep, Smart Trim. That's been around since PrEl 8. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer to do things the old fashioned way, by determining for myself what should be trimmed. I much don't care for the way the audio and video tracks are paired either. I much preferred the older way -- another reason why I like Pr Pro. But, it's just a visual arrangement. You work with them the same way.

Hmm. Thanks Steve. I will check to see what Smart Trim is.
I clicked the scissors to the right side of the shuttle slider and had CTI in position then I moved CTI and clicked scissors again.
I copied then had to learn how to paste my copied audio clip.
Around that time is when I saw the blue slash marks.

I'm with you Bob. I want to trim myself.

While I am writing this I opened my project in PE10.0 and the blue slash marks are gone.

Now that I'm looking at the time line I see the Smart Trim scissors that I did click first thinking that was the scissors I was looking for..

Thanks guys.
Thanks
Richard

Just goes to show you one of the "features" that I have never used.
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

If I understand correctly then if I had an 5 second audio clip in audio track 2 it would play over the audio track 1 in the same 5 second spot?
Thanks
Richard

Yes. You would hear both audio tracks in that 5 second spot.

The thing you need to know about the way later versions of Premiere Elements displays the video and audio tracks is that despite the implied pairing, those audio and video tracks are actually independent. You can place audio clips on any audio track and video or still photos on any video track. Video clips with an audio track are special cases in that the audio will be placed in the "paired" audio track and linked to the video.

If you right click on the timeline, you can delete unused tracks. Audio 1, video 1, narration, and soundtrack will not be removed, but the other unused audio or video tracks will be removed and I find it much easier to work with. You can also add additional audio tracks, video tracks, or paired audio and video tracks as needed.

Also, if you right click on your video, there is an option to unlink the audio and video. Very handy.
