Gaussian Blur and Clear Area

Postby patrickblue » Sat Mar 20, 2021 12:48 am

After adding the Gaussian Blur plugin, I can select to remain clear but only an area shaped as a box. Is there a trick to getting an circle or oval? Basically anything with rounded corners.

Or am I using the wrong tool? When I select the Add Noise plugin I have the same issue.

This is an old tutorial for version 12, but the principles are still the same.

Hope it helps.

Thanks Steve, that was a good refresher on how to use those effects.

Attached is an example of what I'm seeing. When I add the Gaussian Blur to any clip, I get this result.

Ideally, I would like to blur the whole image or have the clear area rounded with feathered edges. No matter what effect I apply to my clip the clear box is always present. Also, this clip has nothing on the tracks above or below it.

I can not seem to find a solution. Is there a setting I'm not seeing?

Thanks for all the help!

Have you tried the Cookie Cutter effect, as in my tutorial? It comes in a variety of shapes.

I have used the Cookie Cutter by following your tutorial and in previous projects it worked great.

Now for some reason, no matter what project I open or create, or what effect I add to the event, I get this box underneath it. For instance, if I was to use the Cookie Cutter to isolate the phone, the box would still be displayed. If I left click and drag the cursor the box is re-positioned and resized. But I can't get rid of it.

I don't know why that would be, Patrick. Unless you can show me how to duplicate it so I can investigate it at this end.

It turns out that the box is not duplicated when rendering. If I use an effect on an event, it shows up in the timeline though. Annoying.

I was thinking of re-installing Vegas but wonder if that's more of a hassle.
