How to make wiggling borders stop..

Postby Mel717 » Fri Mar 23, 2018 3:02 pm

Hi friends and happy Friday!! I have one more issue that has been bothering me for the past year, I’ve tried to get around it, but there has got to be a solution and if anyone can solve this, it’s you guys!!

When I add still pics into my video, I like to crop them, usually 1X1 and then zoom slowly in or out. It’s also visually important to have a border on these images.. 90% of the time when I border and crop these guys, the border lines wiggle like crazy as the pic is zooming in or out.. I’ve tried reversing the order of operations on the fx (border than crop and vise versa) nothing has fixed the problem.
Any advice or ideas??

Thank you so much!!
Mel

P.s if I remember correctly, this problem started occurring after I upgraded to Vegas 15..

I'm not sure what you mean by adding a border to your crop/zoom.

Are the borders around the original image? If not what is the border surrounding? Can you link us to a YouTube video showing an example?

Oh my goodness I don’t see it in this clip!!! The left border wiggles like crazy in Vegas.. here’s a screen shot recording of the same clip

I guess if the final presentation is good I don’t have a problem :)

It does wiggle in that clip, just not as much as it does in Vegas.

Does it still wiggle if you output the clip as de-interlaced?

How would I output the clip and change to deinterlaced? I know how to set it in preferences for the entire project but not sure how to do it for one item.. thank you John!!

Really sorry but I am not a Vegas user. Maybe someone that is might pitch in.

By the way that suggestion of mine is a bit of a longshot. :(

Here are a couple of tricks from the book:

First go to your Project Settings by clicking on the cog on the Preview window. On the Video tab, make sure Field Order is set to None "progressive scan" and your frame rate is 29.97.

Then, right-click on the photo on your timeline and, from the Switches menu, select Reduce Interlace Flicker.

Once you've done that, make sure that you output option you select under Project/Render As is using a progressive rather than interlaced frame rate. In version 15, you can use the Magix AVC output for Internet HD 1080p 29.97 fps (same as your Project Settings).

If that doesn't fix it, I don't know what to suggest.

Hi Mel,

What order are you applying effects in Vegas - which effects to what clip - and then which settings are you using to scale it etc.? It looks to me like some kind of scaling problem and I wonder if we could get round it by adding the border to another track or similar - but I'd like to know I'm starting from the same place as you.

Thank you so much guys for the thoughts, we had some other technical difficulties today, so I couldn’t experiment, but I plan on taking a look now..

@Chris
It doesn’t seem to matter if it’s on a line that has tracking on or not, cropping produces that left border wiggle, I have noticed that zooming out doesn’t have the same problem though..
I usually have pan/crop first then border as my order.. however I have switched this and still get the same thing or it just doesn’t show my border when border is first inline... I’m scratching my head and I live this every day so I can imagine how it sounds, but I will try any advice!

@steve, I’m going to give the book a shot!

Thank you so much!

Though I'd mention that I too have struggled with 'wiggling borders' since 2009, from Sony Vegas MS vs 9 right through to the current vs15. As a matter of course I apply 'reduce interlace flicker' on all photos included in a video project and that does reduce the 'shimmer' in the actual photos when movement is applied.

I have tried all of the above recommendations and that left border still wiggles! I have found that the larger the playback screen, the less wiggle on the border. For example in a project burned to DVD and played back in a DVD player linked to the TV, the border wiggle is less noticeable and maybe to an untrained eye its not noticeable at all, but I see it every time!!
