Can sound and picture playback be slowed down in sync?

Postby jonnyD » Mon Jun 15, 2015 11:24 am

I ripped a YouTube video from the web and loaded it into SMS Platinum 13.0. It's an .mp4 file. I want to slow down the picture and sound together in sync so I can study the picking style of Tony Rice - one of the best flatpicking guitarists in bluegrass. Once I have the file in my timeline, I can right-click on the video track>properties>playback rate and choose to slow down the speed (of the picture, anyway). When I played it back, however, the picture was slowed down but the sound track was normal speed - obviously they were out of sync. I noticed that if I right-clicked on the sound track>properties the choices there are different - and there is no choice to slow down the music track.

Can picture and sound be slowed down for playback in sync?

Try slowing down your video/audio by holding down the Alt key as you stretch the clip. The longer you stretch it, the slower it will play.

Though audio is often not a part of any slow-mo effect. But it's worth a try.

The only workaround I can think of is to handle the audio and video separately. Slow the video down to say 1/5 speed in Vegas/Movie Studio by right-clicking and setting the playback properties. Then do the same with the audio in Sound Forge, an audio editing program. Set it to 1/5 speed. You can then add the slowed audio to your slowed video in Vegas/Movie Studio.

No guarantees. But it's worth a shot.

Where, precisely, do I put the cursor to stretch the track? If I put the cursor on the end of the video track, hold down alt, it just slides the entire tack sown the timeline, no stretching involved.

From SMSP 13 online Help: "Creating slow-motion video" > Hold Ctrl while dragging the edge of the event to time-stretch the event.

Oops! Thanks, vk! You're correct. It's Ctrl, not Alt.

That's what happens when I try to master half a dozen different editors, I guess. Can't rely on the old memory.
