Red screen on time line

Postby Collene » Sun Nov 24, 2013 7:53 pm

I've imported my media in to the Vegas 10 program. The media clips are from my Canon 7D so they are .MOV files. I've added them to the time line along with the one track (so far) of sound. There are some spots where there is a video clip but no sound and other spots where there is sound but no video (I've left a space on the time line because I either have to reshoot a scene or redo a voice over) sometimes when I am playing back the time line the sound works fine but the video goes red in the preview window and stays that way! I can see the clips on the time line but not in the preview window, I can not for the life of me figure out what I've done to make this happen. The first video clip starts several seconds before the first sound clip. That first sound clip is a highlighted pink color, I've never seen that before, it always stays that pink color weather the preview window is functioning properly or not. The red preview window doesn't happen every time but often and when it does all work comes to a halt. I'd appreciate it if anyone had any ideas.
Thanks for the help.

It's just a glitch as far as I've been able to tell. I get it too. Happens to me when I've been running the program too long or have been doing LOTS of rendering. Try rebooting the software.

EDIT: What are your computer specs?

Ken, thank you for the input. My specs are as follows Computer: Toshiba Qosimo X505 Intel (R) Core (TM) i5-2410M CPU@2.30 GHz Ram 8 GB 64 Bit Operating System Camera: Canon EOS 7D Video Camera: Canon Vixia HF s21 Software: Sony Vegas Movie Studio 10.0 HD Platinum. Just so I'm clear on what you're telling me to do (I really only know enough to be completely dangerous to myself) when you say reboot, you mean close the program completely then open it again, correct? Again, thank you it's somewhat comforting to know I'm not the only one seeing red!

Have you ensured that you have the latest version of Quicktime from Apple, per the program's requirements?

Have you set your project settings to match your video specs?

BTW, which operating system are you using? Windows 7, 8 or 8.1?

Steve, Thank you for the suggestions. I did go on line and download Quicktime 7. I am running Windows 7. I believe I have the correct project settings. I'm shooting in HDV with my Canon 7D. I have selected the HDV 1080-60i (1440x1080, 29,970 fps) which matches the information in my 7D manual for video. I'm using Full resolution rendering quality at the Best level and blend fields for the deinterlace method. For audio I'm using a rode mic attached to the camera and for my purposes that's working really well. I've selected the 5.1 surround with a sample rate of 44,100 Hz, a bit depth of 16 and a resample and stretch quality of Best. My hope is it had to do with the Quicktime needing to be updated, we'll see shortly. Again, thanks for the continuing help.

I'd suggest that, rather than setting up your project manually, you use Vegas' excellent Match Video Project Properties to Media tool. You'll find it in under Project/Properties on the Video page. Just click the button to the right of the drop-down list of video Templates and then browse to one of the video from your camera.

See if that changes the program's performance with your footage.

Actually, your 7D will shoot 1080-30p @ 1920x1080. This won't necessarily fix your problem, but this will fix the framerate and black bars you've probably been seeing.

Thank you Steve, I will try the Match setting.

Thank you Kent for the ideal about the 1080-30 @ 1920x1080. I'll keep it in mind for the next project. At this point if I can just make this project work and get it done on time, thereby avoiding abject humiliation I'd be ecstatic!

I've selected the 5.1 surround with a sample rate of 44,100 Hz

44,100 Hz is low. That's the standard sampling rate for CDs. DVDs and Blu-ray disc typically use a sampling rate of 48,000 Hz.

Bob, thank you for the better sample rate. I've gone back and adjusted it.

Steve, I went back and used the match settings as you suggested. It came up with a new frame rate that more closely matched Kent's suggestion (1080 30 @ 1920x1080). I'll give it a go again this morning and see if it will work.

Thank you all for the help. I appreciate this so much.

UPDATE: after implementing all the suggestions and helpful advice I am not currently getting the red screen or green color screen that I have been getting. Thank you for all the help. I do still have to import the media one clip at a time, sometimes when I add it to the trimmer only the audio goes over, I have to delete the segment and import again then I'll get picture and audio. I have to save and close the program after a couple of clips otherwise the program quits responding. I'm wondering if the explanation on pg. 27 about pre-rendering from Steve's book (The Muvipix Guide to Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10) may be something I need to do. Since I'm using footage from the 7D perhaps pre-rendering would help. I've never had to do that before but I never used so much media and exclusively the 7D.

It never hurts to use the Selectively Prerender Timeline feature.

Steve, I did try the selective pre-render you suggested, and it brought back the red screen, and brought a pop up saying the render failed due to low memory. How can I have low memory? I have 8 GB of RAM, and 226 GB of free space out of 452 GB on my computers hard drive . I'm not running any other applications save the windows live photo gallery which is the location I'm getting my media from. And that's only open for the length of time it takes me to select the clip. My processor is an intel core i5. I'm using windows 7 with the quicktime 7. Today is my last day to figure this out. If I can't make it work by tomorrow I have to hand it off to someone else to complete on time. I'd appreciate any other input you might have. Thanks.

I'm sorry, I've never experienced what you're seeing and I can't imagine what would cause it.
