Playhead issue?

Postby BuddyB » Wed Jun 19, 2013 6:58 am

Not sure of this, but after the capture, when playing the tape, at a couple of spots a vertical white line appeared on the left hand side for a brief moment. Off the top of my head I would presume the tape moved while running across the record/play head. I suppose to recapture that portion of the tape might correct the issue. Is this a common occurrence with small tapes? In the past I've dealt with 1/4 and 1/2" audio tape that has done a like thing. This may be one of the reasons I want to head for a device that does SD. I also had a few dropped frames.

Not sure what the could be, Buddy. Can you post a screen capture of this white line?

Meantime, what type of camcorder were you capturing video from (miniDV? HDV?) and what method, device or program did you use to capture it?

I'm using Capture in Vegas MS HD Platinum 10, and the camera is a Panasonic PV DV910 MiniDV. Kinda' embarrassed to say this, but I'm not sure how to do a Screen Capture. I've tried several things and I can insert a blank window. I've even tried a Print Screen and I can't even get that to work.

Just press the Print Scrn button on your keyboard to capture what's showing on your computer.

You can then go to Photoshop Elements/Photoshop and select File/New/Image from Clipboard to open it in that program and crop away what you don't need. Save it as a JPG and you can post to this forum.

I'm not seeing a way to load from my computer. The Img Tab is looking for a URL. Is that the way I'm supposed to go?

Make sure that you're selecting Reply and not Quick Reply when you respond to this post. That will put you in the Full Editor.

Along the bottom of the Full Reply Editor, you'll see a tab for uploading an attachment. Just browse to the .jpg of your screen capture on your computer, select it and click the Add the File button.

You'll notice the thin vetical line on the far left. Some of them were whitish, but this is the first one I came to. And doggonit I've done it this way at other places; must've been the Quick Reply. Thanks again.

Interesting. That line on the left is actually wrapped around from the right side of the image. If you were to cut it off and put it on the right, it would match up perfectly. Not sure what would cause that, especially if it only happens on part of the capture.

I'm stumped too.

Try this, if you would. Down the free program WinDV and use it to re-capture this segment of your video -- and then play back the captured AVI in VLC Media Player (or Windows Media Player) and see if you still see that line.

My guess is that it's on the original footage and not the result of a bug in the capture software. It might be a head out of alignment or something.

There is often noise around the edge of tape-based video. We just don't see it on TV because TVs cut off a little of the edge of every video. Which means, if you're planning to eventually put your video on DVD and watch it on TV, don't worry about it. No one will see it.

But, if you're going to output your video for YouTube or Vimeo, it may show -- though, again, you may be the only person who really notices.

My guess that it is a head alignment problem like Steve suggested. That camera is over 10 years old and I suspect that age is creeping into that camera.

I did as you recommended, as it was capturing I could see an occasional line on the left. I figured the tape wasn't tracking 100%. I bought this to xfer a 50 yr reunion into the computer for a friend. Now that I've been infected by the bug that bit me I will be looking for another. Thanks for the input.

Just a thought.

I have seen this on my (now rarely used) Canon SD camera. Not very often but I have seen it. After exploration I found that it was most likely caused by the camera not being at ambient temperature. The problem never appeared on later recordings because I always made sure that the camera had been allowed to "warm up" before I used it.

Buddy,

I see you've gotten the printscreen/edit in photoshop elements process down. I just wanted to mention a possibly easier way that will work for most uses.

Beginning with Windows Vista and continuing through Windows 7 and 8, there is a Snipping Tool included that will let you define the area to be captured and allow you to save directly as a jpg. It's located in the start menu under All Programs Accessories, but you can locate it easily by typing snipping tool in the Start menu search box -- on my system, it locates it after typing just the leading "sn". You can also pin it to the menu or task bar if you find you use it frequently. It can take different types of snapshots, I set mine to default to rectangular. That way, I start it and then define the rectangle to capture by clicking and dragging on the screen. When the mouse is released, save the capture as a jpg. No fuss, no muss.

Great info, will stick that baby in my utilities folder; obviously a much quicker way to go. And the temp possibility never even dawned on me. I only have a 1 hr battery so I turn it on/off frequently Thanks guys.

I didn't know that. I have been using an old version of Snagit for screen capture. Thanks Bob. =D>
