Need opinion on Audio and clicking

Postby BuddyB » Tue Apr 02, 2013 4:26 pm

No. 1...I'm flat eat up with Vegas HD Platinum; may be divorced if not careful :). I try to average audio volume from 12 to 9 favoring 9. I like it a bit on the hot side, is this wisdom? I got some clicking in the transfer from tape to computer. I tried using the clicking eradicator in FX, but all I got is periodic harmonic beeps. I presume it is because it is a trial version and they don't want you to use it until it's paid for. I hope all in Fx are not like that. A confirmation from someone more experienced with this stuff will be appreciated.
Thanks, BuddyB

Until the experts chime in to help you, why not give some more info?
Source files? You say tape. What is file extension. DV from a camera? What make camera? How did you transfer the video from camera? USB or Firewire? What was your project setting in Vegas?

Probably more questions later from the experts, but your answers to the above questions should help them get started.

Got'cha there TTR, thanks. Source file was an mpg2 from DVminitape, from a Panasonic Palmcorder model PV-DV910D. It was converted in Vegas to .vf. I got it onto the hardrive via Roxio VHS to DVD; Project setting 720x480, DVD. Hope this covers it. Thanks again for the input.

I'd recommend against using Roxio to capture your video. It's doing some funny things to it (like capturing it as an MPEG.)

Your camcorder is a miniDV camcorder, the ideal standard definition video for editing in Movie Studio! Attach it to your computer via FireWire (NOT USB) and use Movie Studio's Capture utility to capture your video. It will be captured in stunning DV-AVI. You'll find this format edits much more easily than MPEG and your results will look terrific!

It may even help you get around that strange beeping problem (assuming the beeps aren't on the tape itself).

Thanks Steve, I knew that Firewire is the better connection; off to the store to get a cable.

Steve,
Other than a slower speed, does a USB connection actually alter the information being transferred? I'd appreciate knowing why "NOT USB," that's all.
Thanks.

Because it's capturing in real time and USB can't transfer all of the needed information fast enough.

You also may not get DV-AVIs are that are fully compatible with Vegas or Movie Studio.

I thought I had replied to this earlier, but I guess not. Here's the deal. MiniDV camcorders record video in DV format on tape. This is more like a bit stream rather than a file which can be copied and played. When you transfer the video from the camcorder, the software on your camcorder streams the recorded DV over a Firewire connection to software on the pc or other equipment which captures the streamed DV. It's the capture software that takes the streamed DV and encapsulates it into a DV-AVI file. USB was not used because it was too slow and the transmission protocol it uses was too prone to interruptions that could cause data loss when streaming data. Many miniDV camcorders didn't have a USB port. Those that did typically used that for transferring other types of files such as still snapshots. Current AVCHD camcorders are different, they do not record bitstreams that require capturing -- they create actual video files which can easily be copied over USB.

Excellent explanation. I appreciate the time you took to break it down for me. :-D

I was about to get Firewire, but discovered my system does not have that. I have a DVD-D and HDMI connection on the back of the box. Will either one of those suffice for taking advantage of of Capturing in Vegas? And if both are compatible which would be the better? Thanks.

Unfortunately, no. Video from tape-based digital cams, like miniDV and HDV camcorders, must be captured over a FireWire connection.

I, unfortunately, will have to use the Roxio VHS to DVD. It's strange, my old 32bit XP machine had Firewire. When I went in to Best Buy for a Firewire cable, not realizing I didn't have the connection, they told me they didn't have any, and that USB 3 was taking its place.

I never even thought of that..cool baby shakes! That sounds like a winner. I'm sure I have an extra slot in there, and if so I will be doing the Firewire thing. Thanks John.
