Will my project fit on my Blu-ray disc?

Will my project fit on my Blu-ray disc?

Postby Uncle Ben » Wed Nov 14, 2012 7:13 am

I'm working on a project, adding videos and slideshows, music, etc. I'm using Movie Studio Platinum 12. Although the screen gives me a lot of information about my project, I'm missing one important piece of information: will my project fit on the disc? MS doesn't give me that, correct? Once I pass it on to DVD Architect I know ... but by the time I get there, I've already wasted my time rendering a project that must be trimmed back ... back to square one.

What did I miss?

Fitting a project to disc no matter what program you are using is generally not a big issue.
Programs will compress the files down to make them fit if you allow for that.
There isn't so much an issue with the size of a project (in file size) but rather in length (time).
Projects that are less than 1 hour will easily fit onto a DVD or Blu Ray disc with only minor compression and great quality. Projects that get over 2 hours will definitely be compressed and will lose quality in the process.

So, how long is your project Ben?

It was over 3 hours and had to cut it in half to produce it in two parts (two discs.) I don't like the "fit to disc", I find that you generally lose too much in quality. Prior to using Sony Movie Studio, I used a number of other, much cheaper, video production applications; and without exception, all of them had an indicator showing how much room was left on the disc as items were added in. I was hoping that I'd miss something ... but I guess that indicator is simply not there.

If there is an indicator I'm sure that Steve will pop in and let you know where to find it.

I would not recommend trying to fit 3 hours of video on a standard BluRay disc, Ben. DVD Architect may not even be able to compress it that much.

You can fit 2 hours of hi-def video on a standard BluRay and about 4 hours on a dual-layer disc.
