Saving format for future use

Postby Doc K » Sat Apr 21, 2012 8:09 am

In the Muvipix Guide to Vegas, one of the reasons listed for saving your movie to your hard drive is "To save or archive your video in a high-quality format, or to save it for later use in another editing project."

Thus, it is recommended to save your projects in:

* DV-AVI for standard def video, and
* MPEG-2 for hi-def video

My question/comment is:

If it's not too FX heavy, requiring pre-rendering, why not just keep it in Vegas format, with all its associated stills, audio, and video files? (a .vf file)

Wouldn't this facilitate quicker editing in the future?

I agree with you Doc, keep all the original files and the original project together. That is what I do. I think that when this was written the tape based HDV file which has an MPEG 2 format was reccomended.

It is a good idea -- however Sidd pointed out the disadvantage. You can't just save a .vf file. It won't do you much good by itself. You have to save with that file all of the media you've imported into the project too -- and that can be a bit clumsier than simply saving a finished AVI or MPEG file.

Keep in mind also that a future version of Vegas might not be able to open your old format .vf file or changed features may cause it to render differently. Go ahead and save the .vf and all the media if you wish, but save a copy of the rendered file too.
