GPU Accelleration in Vegas Pro 11

Postby Chris B » Mon Nov 28, 2011 5:09 pm

I've been "playing" with Vegas Pro 11's GPU acceleration. It seems there is a huge variation in the performance increase that it gives dependent on exactly waht you're going. Here's a table of some of the results I've got.

Rendertest is the one from http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=722194&Replies=113, Photos is my WMC photo example. And HDV is a bit of HDV footage with a few transitions and a very few effects. All tests done with specs as my Sig.
Code: Select all
                 Render GPU  No GPU
rendertest to HDV       0:59  5:08  1440x1920x60i Mpeg 2
Photos AVCHD with GPU   8:30  17:31 GPU accelleration for AVCHD export - 1920x1080x50i
Photos AVCHD no GPU     9:36  19:17 No GPU accelleration for AVCHD export - 1920x1080x50i
HDV to AVCHD with GPU   7:58  8:02  GPU accelleration for AVCHD export - 1440x1080x50i
HDV to AVCHD no GPU     9:35  10:16 No GPU accelleration for AVCHD export - 1440x1080x50i
Hdv to HDV              5:07  5:18  1440x1080x50i  Mpeg2

For the AVCHD export there are two sets of GPU acceleration. One for the encoder and one for the renderer. The table above shows both.

You can see that the "rendertest" really likes the GPU but normal HDV to AVCHD export shows much less gain. The phototest is somewhere in the middle.

Higher render speed is good... but I can always go for a coffee or leave it over night. What I like is the improved timeline playback performance. :)

Paul - if you can give me specific examples I can try them out - however I did a test with multiple tracks at "good" quality. Playing HDV files the I got 2 tracks without dropped frames with CPU only and 4 with CPU+GPU. AVCHD files gave 1 with CPU and 3 with CPU+GPU.

Generally with the GPU enabled the system is more responsive and nicer to use. I've not noted any stability issues with the program at all.

Similar-ish timeline playback performance... I used "Best (half)" playback resolution rather than the "Good" that you used and with CPU only (Intel Core i7) I was dropping frames with one AVCHD track... with CPU+GPU I could playback four AVCHD tracks, 3 being picture-in-picture at full frame rate.

Not seeing any stability issues which is good.
