Before & After Photos - Photoshop or Elements

Postby momoffduty » Thu Aug 11, 2011 2:37 pm

In my off time I have been trying to play & learn PS CS5. Thought I'd share a few before & after photos. Please share your before & after photos too whether it was made in PS or PSE.

The scenic shots were from a small point & shoot type camera, so not too good quality to begin with. Corrected with Levels & Curves Adj layers. The first one I did the sky & ground separately.

The old photo was touched up slightly. Wanted to keep the oldness, but also didn't want to have a plastic look.

All of my photos come out in jpgs, so it took me awhile to understand that I could use camera raw on a jpg. The following 2 photos were taken in Alaska in 2001, using Camera Raw (the initial page of adjustments only) to make adjustments.

I just played with all the Camera Raw levers until I like the finished product.

This was taken .. thru a window .. on a rainy day. So I was thrilled with the results I got playing with Camera Raw.

This first little guy I spent hours on trying to get rid of the shadow!! I finally separated the cactus shadow onto another layer (not easy), then I could play with the settings for each separately.

I also used Camera Raw on this little Coyote Pup, as I couldn't seem to get the settings I wanted playing around with the settings in Photoshop. Camera Raw sort of leads you through the options .. and you can go back and forth, so it's really easy to make adjustments .. change your mind .. go back .. without a lot of fuss.

You did a great job on that old photo, Cheryl. That must have taken some work!

Jayell, love the before and after photos, thanks for sharing. It is amazing with a little tinkering and the photos look so much better. I started off working in Camera Raw, but feel more comfortable in PS. My brother the photographer swears by Camera Raw for minor adjustments. I may have to revisit some tuts.

I had another photo shot on my point & shoot of my husband & our host student inside a restaurant/bar. It was very dark. We gave up trying to get a good photo. Instead of deleting them I tried a little levels adj in PS and it came out worth saving. Not the best, but okay.

On some other photos, there was a slight blur since it was taken with the long lens and no tripod. Did a few sharpens and again worth saving.

Any good books on photo restoring?

That's pretty much my story also. I usually forget about it. But you may recall, you can play with multiple sliders without having to pull down all sorts of menus and trying to figure out yourself what you should do next. Camera Raw sort of guides you through the process. If I had a REALLY important photo that I'm willing to spend time to get it right .. I'd go to Camera Raw. I'm usually in a hurry, and don't do much critical work .. so 'looks good' is good enough.

I, too, can recommend the Katrin Eismann book 'Retouching and Restoration'.

Here are the results of one of my attempts to repair photo damage:

Re Camera RAW. Working on RAW files is like working from an original negative but the advantage of using RAW in Photoshop is that no changes that one makes change anything on the original. The mantra is 'use RAW for the global (changes) Photoshop for the (detail) adjustments'. RAW is now my preferred workflow.

All of this is very well covered in the 'Lynda - Photoshop CS5 Essentials' training DVD where RAW and Bridge are very thoroughly covered in the first eight(?) or so chapters. That Lynda training is recommended as a means of getting off to a good start in Photoshop.

For quick fixes to colour balance I use the eyedroppers in the Curves adjustment tool.

Here are two more pics where I deliberately changed the contrast and brightness settings to bring out the mountains and snow more effectively - and, yes, that is Sicilian snow!

Thanks Gerlinde for the link, bookmarked. Amazing before & after photos John. I did watch the tuts at Lynda about Raw when I first got CS5. It may be worth getting a couple of months tuts to revisit.

When you work in Camera Raw for adjustments, don't you have to save the file as a copy so it doesn't change the original?

I'd have to go look it up again, Cheryl .. but I don't think so .. I think that's part of the point of using it. That you can undo or change anything without changing the original.

I volunteer for Operation Photo Rescue. This site was started after the Katrina disaster and is dedicated to restore pictures damaged during flooding or storms. Here is a link to the site's Gallery and the pictures I have restored: http://www.operationphotorescue.org/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=myimages;u=260;start=0
