Miniature Series Part 2 - UPDATE new photo

Postby momoffduty » Mon Aug 14, 2017 9:01 am

The third in the miniature set from this summer. I showed the sail boat to the grands before posing and told them what they will be doing on the boat. The coffee table served as a boat and a mop handle as the mast. Since I had already shot the background I knew the POV angle. Wing and a prayer it came together. I posted this last night on Flickr and today the photo was selected in Explore :-D

This psd file is so large that the thumbnail doesn't show up. I think because of all the layers and blend modes for the lighting? :-8

That is really cool. What did you do to create that unearthly light source/glow on the kids?

Mom that is a pretty amazing photo. I think it is your best of the bunch. it looks flawless. Whatever that style is called you have nailed it 100%.

I do notice that the kids are barefoot. Nice subtle Style point.

Mom, Have you thought about submitting the photo to Adobe to use in the Ad campaign? I see that Adobe is using the tagline "go from blank page to brilliant" and the pictures that they use are very similar to your concept. How cool would that be.... :)

Thanks everyone! And thanks Sidd for the Adobe suggestion for photo submission. The kids like the photos and gives me an opportunity to something with them that hopefully they will remember grandma.

The lights are painted on using different blend modes. Step one is to paint in light and shadow, with shadow Multiply mode. Usually screen works good and sometimes hard light or overlay for light. I adjust the opacity and sometimes if it is too saturated then a clipping Adjustment Hue/Sat layer. Another process I used was a evening sky photo and painted in just the areas I wanted. I have a darkening recipe in Nik Collection to paint in the areas like the corners and parts of the boat and people. The third process was at the final stages using CrossProcessing filters in Nik Collection. One for the overall and 2 that I painted in the highlights here and there.

It is a lot of tweaking. It helps to let the photo marinate a few days and open it back up with fresh eyes. I went back and redid the last 5 or 6 layers several times and tweaked others.

The process is called "Fantasy photos" and there are a ton of resources if you google the words. Careful, some are nsfw. Here is an artist that I admire her work, Renee Robyn. A quick timelapse of one of her creations

The flower bag is vintage from the 1960s and the woven bag is from Acapulco 1950"s. They belonged to my MIL.
