RGB vs CMYK

Postby momoffduty » Sun Apr 19, 2015 12:13 pm

I am working on a project for a non-profit. The concept file was RGB and the colors are dynamic. My version was for concept only since their affiliate has in-house marketing dept. who would print. Now, the group wants a CMYK version to print outside because it is more cost effective.

The RGB version is has more dynamic colors with the blend modes & glows, etc. than the CMYK version. Is this to be expected?

That's not unusual. CMYK has a much smaller gamut than RGB and your brighter or more saturated colors are more likely to be outside the CMYK gamut and will become darker and/or less saturated when the color space conversion is done.

Thanks Bob. That explains the muted colors.

Here's an article from Adobe that goes over conversion to cmyk and preparation for delivery.

Thanks for the article Bob. Bookmarked! I had to create the file from scratch using the printer's template. The template had their color profile. The text and wordmarks were all white so no problem. It was the background that I had to recreate step by step. Good thing I had notes on what I did 4 years ago when I created the background and fortunately still had the psd with all of the layers. The muted colors threw me off with the blend modes, etc.
