sharpening a photo

Postby AVITRY » Tue Jun 26, 2012 2:35 pm

I know very little about photo touch up, but, because I convert some vhs to dvd, the family thinks I can do anything, LOL.

Anyway, my son sent this photo and asked if I could sharpen it. I cropped out his head in this example. The photo was 640 x 980. I didn't think there was any way, but then I had an idea.

Would I get any improvement if I printed this out as a very small photo, and then scanned it at a very high pixel count and resaved it as a digital photo file? :-k

I highly doubt it will work. You can't create missing information.

I don't have Photoshop, but Photoshop Elements.
There must be some similar fixes to smartfix, but manual instead of automatic.
From what I can see of the photo, it looks like it will be a challenge.

From what I hear CS6 has a pretty amazing sharpening feature.
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

If you are referring to the feature about which Adobe released a video (a guy on stage was demonstrating it in front of an audience), it never made it into CS6. They hadn't got all the bugs out (Isn't that unusual for Adobe? )

But I'm sure that it must still have a pretty good sharpen feature.

Ahhh, too bad because it looked like that was going to be a great feature.

Adobe is now on a two year release cycle with the ".5" release in the middle. That puts CS6.5 in 2013 and CS7.0 in 2014.

I was trying out some things in Camera Raw, after converting the photo to JPG. You sure get different looking results in a browser than in Photoshop.

Thought I would add another version of Bella. This time I was using some plug-ins from Topaz Labs. A few plug-ins have controls for "Dynamics," "Structure," "Detail Boost that can bring out the hidden detail.

Amazing how it just isn't as easy as they make it in CSI. They just whack a grainy shot taken by a closed circuit camera at night from a distance at an awkward angle with the light behind into the computer and...bazinga!...the perp's face magically appears. :conf:

rusty, There is a preset for lifting a reflection of a face from the pupil of someones eye, but that didn't apply in this case. I'm saving up for the subscription plan to the "forensic" plug-in. That's one million dollars a year, and you can pay with paypal.

Has anyone heard back from Avitry, or perhaps Bella?
