Recommendation for streaming video player

Postby Ron Hunter » Mon Dec 03, 2012 3:43 pm

I'm looking for a product to connect to my TV that will wirelessly:
- allow Netflix streaming.
- allow viewing of rental movies from Amazon, and possibly from iTunes store.
- allow viewing of home videos from my computer.

What do you recommend?

Thanks!
Desktop: HPE-580T, i7-950 (3.07GHz), 16GB RAM, Win'7 64-bit Home Premium, PSE12/PRE12, Lightroom 5.
Laptop: MacBook Pro (retina), 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5.
Cameras (in use): Panasonic GH4/Canon HFR400/Canon HV30, GoPro HD Hero2.

I have a blue ray player that does 1 & 2 of your requests. Most of the newer players do that. Streaming Hi Def from your computer is another story. A quick check of the streaming forums shows that streaming Hi def using Wi Fi is still in the infancy stage. Some have been partially successful using power line adapters. But you haven't stated what kind of home vids you want to stream from your computer. There are tutorials on how to do all of this on YouTube.

Thanks!

I already have a BD player and would prefer to not buy a new one.

The HD home movies on my PC are typically *.m2t files. I suspect they can stream over our wireless network to "the box", whatever that is.

OK, to stream those .m2t files using wi fi will be iffy. Suggest you look at the specs and reviews of the power line adapters.

+1 for the powerline approach. Much better than wifi (IMHO).

I use AV200 adapters (a mixture of Belkin Passthrough and TP-Link) for streaming videos/music etc. around the house from a NAS. No problems at all.

TP-Link have just upgraded their AV200 range to AV500 (sorry, could only obtain a link to the UK site):-

Regarding gigabit powerline adapters, I have only read poor reviews about their performance.
AMD Ryzen 3900x 12C/24T, ASUS x570 mobo, Arctic Liquid Freezer ll 280, Win11 64 bit, 64GB RAM, Radeon RX 570 graphics, Samsung 500GB NVMe 980 PRO (C:), Samsung 970 Evo SSD (D:), Dell U2717D Monitor, Synology DS412+ 8TB NAS, Adobe CS6.
