FLV v MOV or the Third Way

Postby GerryB » Sun Feb 05, 2012 5:13 am

Good morning to you all,,

We have a bit a snow here in the UK and there is chaos again!! :sb:

My question;
What is the specification for the viewer that can be used to play clips on either PCs or Apple devides (not phones and tablest, yet!) from a web site?

I can use the Flash or/and I can use the MOV (coded with h.264) viewers but I would like to have a common single viewer set up. To have two seperate coded files is going to be a pain.

Many thanks,

Gerry

MOVs coded with H.264 are probably the closest you'll find to universal -- especially if they are saved with the .mp4 suffix. Though some PC viewers may have to install the Quicktime player to play them.

How are you going to share these files, Gerry? That will also help determine your options also.

If you're going to display your video online, you can embed a Flash player into the web page, as YouTube does, which makes it pretty universal.

But if you'll tell us more about the program you're using to output your video, what version it is, how you're going to share your video with your friends and if it's hi-def or standard def, we can recommend the ideal format for quality, universality and efficiency in size.

Steve,
Many thanks for coming back with the .mp4 approach.
I'm confortable with the PC side of the operation, I have a site that plays Flash files no problem but I have been asked to play out for Apple devices as well, hence the move to common format for the two systems.
I know mp4 will play in a QuickTime plugin on a PC but the file will not play on an iPad and that is where I'm coming unstuck.
It should work but - no luck!
I'm using the H.264 codec in CS5 Media Encoder.

iPads do play mp4 video, that is the native format from what I understand.
There must be something missing.
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

Thanks Chuck.
I'm beginning to suspect the wireless connection but as the 'user' is 100 miles away I can't verify the problem or check if the QuickTime viewer is installed. User is not a 'techie'.
I'll plough on.

Gerry, it sounds like you're depending on the viewer to have their own player. Might be better if you put your own viewer on the Website (is it your own site?) to guarantee your videos will play. I use JWPlayer http://www.longtailvideo.com/players.

Jay,
Thanks for your thoughts. The player is embedded within the web site but the problem was the feedback I was getting. I think the problem has been resolved now, fingers crossed!
