YouTube Quality

Postby Dave McElderry » Tue Oct 25, 2011 5:29 pm

I just used PrEl 9 to share a video to YouTube that was originally standard def 640x480 widescreen. My only choice of preset, or at least the only one that made sense, was Flash Video for YouTube (widescreen). I'm not happy with the resulting quality - lots of jaggies. On playback the only two quality settings available are 240p and 360p. I would have thought that I would have been able to at least view it in 480. Are there any other methods that would give me better quality results? If I were to create an mpeg and upload it manually would this make a difference? I haven't done much YouTube sharing, as you very well may tell.

Very useful. I'm going to approach this differently. Thanks Chuck!

Looks like they really like the H.264 Codec, it does give really good quality in a smaller file size.

Ted posted a few months ago trying to get better HD settings. On page 2 of the discussion I posted screen shots of my settings from PrPro on h.264 for Vimeo. They may help. The second screen shot is for widescreen. In PrPro you can deinterlace. I think there was confusion on whether PrEl 9 deinterlaces the conversion.

Thanks Chuck. I'll make a point of checking out the H.264. Cheryl, I do vaguely remember that thread now, but at the time your post wasn't applicable to anything I was doing and it kind of went under my radar. I'll see if I can put this info to work. I appreciate it. :TU:

It turns out the H.264 is the codec that PrEl 9 uses for the preset that I had tried.

Can you start off with the preset & tweak the numbers to achieve better quality?

The only thing that really makes a difference is the max and min bitrate settings.

Does version 9 have the AVCHD export presets? I don't have that version available right now.
Version 10 has the AVCHD category under Share/Computer, and then about 28 presets of which many are MP4. There is also a YouTube preset.

You could use the NTSC DV Widescreen setting and change the bit rates but the default is pretty good, min 3 max 6. You can probably go as low as min 2 and max 4 and still get pretty good quality. Make sure you use the 2 pass variable encoding rather than 1 pass, that will help the quality.

The 720p 60 preset is pretty good if you are working with High Def footage.

Done. I created a wmv file that actually used a 720 preset. I'm very satisfied with the results. It does cause YouTube to make 720p one of the options, but of course it's never going to be better than 480. I appreciate all of your help and suggestions. BTW, I could not find any way to tweak the preset in PrEl 9. I'll post this video in a separate topic after while. Thanks!

Dave, I don't have PrEl but I think you have to go Share>Computer to put in your own values. Looking forward to your creation. :)
