In Saturn's Rings - IMAX - AE

Postby momoffduty » Tue Sep 03, 2013 3:17 pm

The IMAX moving coming out in Spring 2014 was created using photographs stitched together, no CGI. Here is the trailer and the blog on the back story.

Oh wow! Teaser is right. I really want to see more. Looks like a trip to Dayton will be in our future come next spring.

Everything about it says CGI to me, even though I know it isn't.

Isn't it amazing when nature looks better than anything we could imagine or create artificially?

I thought I read somewhere that the cameras were black & white and they colored the images?

...they colored the images

Just a clarification. It's not colorized in the way you would add color to an old black and white photo. The three black and white images taken through different primary colored filters essentially form primary color channels that can be combined to produce the color image. It's similar to how the sensor works in your digital camera. That sensor records grayscale intensity (i.e. luminosity) through primary colored filters also. Instead of three separate exposures, the sensitive spots on the camera's sensor are arranged in a matrix that allow recording the luminosity through primary color filters. Knowing the color of the filters, the color of the object can be reconstructed.

If what Bob says is right, the color work isn't as manipulative as I'd earlier assumed though.
