Scale to frame size question

Postby JP's » Tue Aug 30, 2011 9:06 am

Hello everyone.

I am starting a new project with video (DV-AVI from a HV20 standard definition) and stills re-sized to 1000x750.

My question is should I uncheck scale to frame size for the video clips? Some of the video will move across the screen. All video clips are scaled down to fit just outside the safe margins (95% scale).

In some scenes a video (scaled down) and stills will overlay the main video.

Thanks for your help,
James

If you plan to do any keyframing or add any pan & zoom Ken Burns motion across your photos, you should definitely uncheck the option to Scale to Frame Size. (In fact, if you uncheck this option in Edit/Preferences BEFORE you add your still photos, you won't have to do it individually to the photos later.)

Scale to Frame Size automatically sets your photos' Scale properties so that they fill your 4:3 video frame. Great, if you're just going to have them sit there.

But if you plan to do any panning or zooming over your photos, you'll want to use them at their full 1000x750 size, about a third larger than your video frame, so that you've got some extra pixels to work with. (Scaling your images to around 65% under Motion in the Properties panel should make them fit perfectly in standard DV frame.)

Are you using the widescreen preset? When I make standard DV projects from my HV30 & HV20 I use the widescreen preset and there is no need to scale down the video. And I resize the photos to 1600xcontrain proportions. The photo size may be a little overkill and depending on your computer specs may bog things down.

Widescreen preset is used for this project (16:9).

I would like to have the video move across the screen, move in a little and have PIP for some scenes.

Did not know if it was necessary to uncheck the scale to frame size for the video clips. All stills are unchecked.

When the video clips appear in the preview window they are larger than the safe margins. To make sure all of the video is displayed on the screen, the image size is reduced to 95%.

Is this a mistake?

I would not scale the video to 95% to fit inside the safe margins because if it is viewed on a computer monitor you will have a black border and the same if viewed on a flat screen TV. The only time I refer to safe margins is to place titles inside the inner margin. If viewing on an older TV you will lose some viewing areas outside the safe margins.

Did not know.

Will make the changes tonight.

Do I need to worry about the scale to frame size for the video clips?

Thank You,
James

No worry. The video file size will match the project preset.
