OK, I bit the bullet and upgraded to PrE3

Postby rustysterling » Mon Apr 09, 2007 10:01 pm

I got it for a good price ($60) and even get a $30 rebate. I've already loaded the 3.0.2 patch and downloaded the Flash player. Just exported the RS&F music video to .flv. What version of flv should I use. I used 7 at 400 but wonder about the two defaults for 8.

PrE2 is still loaded on the computer but I figure I'll trash it in a week or so (I'll just not remove any common files).

3 looks interesting. What should I watch out for?

I would think that the higher the version (of Flash) the better. Occasionally that's wrong, but ... you may also want to go with a slightly higher quality setting. I use 768kbps and that seems to be a nice medium.

The FLV Player that we have here in the Gallery is ready for Flash 8/9 :)

Regarding using Version 3. Even though the 3.0.2 patch cures the slow response of PE3 in the Sceneline view it hasn't fully resolved the Timeline responsiveness. So in complex projects with many stills/videos it is best to avoid Video track 1. So put your media on Video track 2.

Paul: Thanks for that tip. I'll keep it in mind.

I haven't tried to burn a DVD yet, so I'll soon find out how challenging that is. I was pretty successful with v.2. So we shall see.

One of the main reasons I upgraded to v.3 is because of my Sony HDR-FX1. At least it allows me to capture the camcorders native HDV instead of downconverting. I'll let ya all know how well it works.

It's pretty likely that, if you didn't have problems with version 2, you'll have no problems with version 3 either.

Most (most, but not all) of the problems people have with Premiere Elements are related to either system configuration or source file types rather than the program itself. So, if you've got a good workflow going, you'll be fine -- and have a few new features to play with too!

I just have to remember little things like turning off screensaver and disabling my wireless internet connection whenever I work with PrE. Also, if I've been working on a project a very long time I also will save and close it and reboot just to clear the memory. If there is one thing I've learned over the years it's that Windows is a terrible memory manager. I suspect I'll not have problems with workflow. But I'm keeping 2.0 around for a little while just in case.

I think that one of the reasons I've done well with workflow is due to things I've learned on this forum and the Adobe forum -- things like proper sizing of photos and exporting to .avi and working in small chunks. The advice I've seen has been invaluable.

Why do you have to turn off your wireless connection?

And where can I find that patch?

Here is the 3.0.2 patch:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/ ... ftpID=3565

Regarding turning virus scanner and wireless off is to reduce resources used by other applications and so they are available for PE3. Guess it depends how powerfull your computer is.

Paul: I already have the 3.0.2 patch installed. In fact, I downloaded it before I even got PrE 3.0 just so I'd be ready.

Dee Dee: I turned off the wireless connection just in case there was anything on my machine that wanted to check for updates, etc. I've found that any process outside of PrE will cause problems. So I just make sure that won't happen with the most likely suspects -- and screensaver is a big one. But I've had things interupted by the wireless network when something legitimate snuck in to let me know about an update. I hate when that happens.
