If you have to water cool you are pushing your hardware way too far. You are also, IMO, getting into seriously diminshing returns for performance vs cost.

Chuck,

Like you, I'm a fan of Dell computers. But when I go searching for desktops on their Web site, I see listings for their XPS series -- 210, 420 and 720 -- but don't seem to see any listings for the Precision 490 model. Am I looking in the wrong place?

thanks,
steve

Chuck,

What specs would you recommend for a laptop for PE4?
Thanks.

Good question George.

Laptops are getting to the point where they make good video editing systems.
I would pretty much stick to the Middle of the Road desktop machine from above with a few differences.

Onboard nVidia Quadro Graphics or equivalent

120gb Hard Drive (two drives if possible) 7200 RPM if possible also.

At least 2GB of RAM

17" Widescreen would be nice too, the screen size will make a lot of difference.
You can always connect an external monitor also, then you can have dual monitors :)

Any of the Core 2 Duo processors will be good for video editing, the faster the better.
My laptop is a Dell (Precision M65 Series) Latitude D820, it works with video very well.
I run Premiere Elements 3 and 4, After Effects CS3 and Photoshop CS3 Extended without any problems.
It still isn't as fast as my desktop but works pretty good when I am away from home. A faster hard drive would probably help, which is what I am currently looking for.

Thanks Chuck. My desktop systems have two hard drives but I haven't seen a laptop that will accomodate 2 internal hard drives so I assume one would have to be external? Also most of the hard drive speeds I see are 5400 RPM.
I'll keep looking.
Thanks again.

There are laptops with two internal drives now and most new laptop drives are 7200 RPM.
Keep looking you will find them :)

In the Dell Outlet you can find lots of the XPS M1330s with a 200gb 7200 RPM drive but the screen is only 13"
There is other stuff out there I'm sure just keep looking around.

Yes Chuck, someone else is interested. I was just investigating earlier today.

I did see 7200 rpm hard drives as optional in several places.

Do we need a 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT or is a 128MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GS OK?
(Edit: looks like 1330 only has the choice of the GeForce 8400M GS 128MB)

I know someone who has the XPS M1330 and really likes it. The light weight is one of the definite pluses for travel. Apparently it is available with an LED screen, that some people like - what do you think?

There is now a Dell XPS 1530 but the screen max resolution (1280x800) was commented to be low for that size in some critiques I was reading today.

I run 1680 x 1050 on my laptop, 1280 x 800 is a little low. The M1330 looks like a good machine to me. I am still running 128mb video memory on my desktop and it works fine, if you can get the 256 you might see some minimal improvement but not anything outstanding. The only question would be if it supports the GPU effects and transitions or not.

My stepson wanted a laptop.

Despite Mrs Twosheds and me trying to advise him (we both worked in IT from the days when it was called DP) stepson went and bought the highest spec 17" Alienware laptop he could find (he needed a laptop for university).

After one year toting it around the campus he sold the 17" monster and bought an Apple laptop.

Moral: That 17" hi res screen on your laptop may look superb but if portability is an issue for you then maybe you should think again......

Chuck,

Am I right in thinking that Dell's new "all-in-one" XPS model probably lacks sufficient firepower to effectively run PrEl? As far as I can tell, it doesn't seem as if that model is customizable (in terms of adding more muscular video cards, etc) as opposed to many of Dell's other models.

I appreciate your insights.

Here's the link to Dell's XPS "all-in-one", which comes in three different flavors:

The single hard drive would cause me problems, the Essential One is pretty much worthless for video in my opinion and at that price you can get a lot better machine. You really need to go to the next level, then you spend $1800+ and that is ridiculous for a system that can only hold one hard drive. At that price you can afford a very nice Precision workstation from the Outlet :)

I agree, not really a video editing machine, it isn't even a good gaming machine. Both thumbs down on this one although it looks like it has some good reviews I don't think the buyers will be happy with it in a year or two. That will be about the time they want to expand it and find out the limitations. I remember my first Packard Bell, what a nightmare. You had to buy a new one, they didn't allow any kind of upgrading of parts at all. I only bought one of those before I learned my lesson and discovered what to look for in a new PC - expandability and upgrade ability.
