Thanks, Chuck, for that assessment. I have a feeling that Dell is going for the "aesthetics" vote with this model -- competing for customers who like the look and feel of Apple's similarly sleek machine. But it sounds like video work still requires a conventional, albeit beefed-up, black box.

best,

Re: Recommended Video Editing System Specs

Here is a slightly different question. My current system is about four years old, but was good for it's time - P4 3.2 HT, 2GB RAM, RAID 0. Since PCs are my (semi-retired) business, I know them well and my current system ("professionally maintained" :) ) runs great. But I would like some more processing power to generate those DVDs and I would like to use my system while PE is rendering.

So, do I get an all new system and replace my current system, or do I get a new PC just as a PE processor? Edit on the old PC, use LAN storage for the files, render on the new PC in the "background". And get a switch to switch the screen, keyboard, mouse, etc. between them.

Configuration-wise, they two wouldn't be very different. I would get a minimal video card anyhow, but would probably not put RAID 0 on a second unit.

Thoughts?

Hi Bob,
I got a new system just for video and with a KVM switch could just switch between them.
However I got separate monitors for them both and do graphics and DVD burning on my old PC, while doing video, rendering, DVD Burning and After Effects work on the new one. I copy the Encore project and files from the new machine to the old one and can burn two discs at the same time.
That's just the way I did it.
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

I don't do Encore or After Effects, etc. - at least not now. The second (new) PC would be strictly for rendering, and I would think in that environment that the switch would be OK, as nothing is really going on on the screen of the rendering PC.

On the other hand, in this green, carbon-conscious age, is having two PCs running in my office a waste? Well, perhaps I could just shut down the new PC and only fire it up on the infrequent times I actually render.

Thanks for the input!

I might consider adding a second 17" monitor -- or, better, a pair of 19" instead (or maybe one big 22"). This program benefits from a lot of screen space!

i'm thinking about hooking up my 32" samsung lcd tv. i'm assuming that would be big enough?

is there enough RAM and processor speed to move it along?

I tend to doubt it would work, it would all depend on if your graphics card supports it or not.

If the TV has a VGA, DVI or HDMI output and you have the same connector or an adapter on the graphics card it might very well work.
