This belongs in our resources section as well and they should be up there soon (barring any snags or interruptions).

I haven't been able to monitor the board since I remember reading that version 4 had big problems and we weren't being advised to buy until they were corrected. Has that changed? As they say on Wall St. "do we have a buy recommendation now"? I respect your advice more than anything and I'm ready to go to Amazon on this site if the problems are being solved.
Thanks.

Issues have all been resolved for the most part. There are still some minor irritations and the possibility of having to re-install to fix a couple issues that don't show up right away. Animated text is a problem but it is a new feature and still in kind of a trial phase, they will work the kinks out in the next version or two.
Overall version 4 seems to be quite stable and we have workarounds or fixes for all of the major issues now and a few of the minor ones as well. I would say go ahead and get version 4 if you like what you see in Steve's review/article and in the tutorials.

Hey Chuck -

Glad to know I didn't throw my money away with the purchase of PE4. Is there a comprehensive list of issues and fixes/workarounds someplace?

Thanks!

There are no real workarounds for the problems in the Organizer or the Animated Text, hopefully a patch will fix those sometime soon.

If you find that you cannot open your project files anymore a re-install of Premiere Elements will fix the problem.

WAV files exported from version 4 cannot be edited in Audacity, hopefully a patch would fix this also.

Other than those items I can't think of anything else, anybody else have issues with workarounds or fixes?

The trial download is the kind that you can activate by entering a serial number. So you are downloading everything, except that your video is watermarked while in the 30-day trial period.

With all due respect, I am going to have to disagree with this statement if you are going to install on a vista based machine... My experience, along with a number of others here have found that PE 4 and vista make for a very unstable mix. Unless there are patches that I am not aware of, I am going to say it is a "Sell" and not a "Buy" recommendation...

Sorry JB, maybe I should clarify that I am running on Windows XP and have not found anything that would stop me from buying the program.
The issues that were brought up back in September have fixes or workarounds as far as XP installations go, Vista seems to have issues of its own I guess.

So what are you finding that makes this program unusable on a Vista machine?

Alex, will be better to start your own thread as you will get more attention. One thing... is your drive formatted NTFS or FAT32? Needs to be NTFS.

Sorry Alex but you seem to be rambling, or at least trying to get 1000 words and into a short paragraph :)
Can you please explain each problem in a little more detail, 10 minute tape, 20 minute capture, not rendering, coping video effects, new laptop, version 3, USB microphone not working, specs. Wow, that is a lot of problems but no information about what is going on and what you are trying to do.

By the way, there is a version 3 patch that will fix the Vista issues. Version 3 does run on Vista with the patch.
There is a problem with USB microphones and it has to do with Stereo vs Mono, one works the other does not, can't remember which is the right one though.

Can you have PE3 and PE4 running at the same time. If so, is PE4 and PS6 worth $90 from Bestbuy?

So I could be encoding one project on one version and editing another project on the other?
