I'd like to see a "For Sale" area

Postby Dave McElderry » Mon Feb 01, 2010 4:46 am

I don't mean to open a Pandora's Box here, because I'm sure that this has been discussed behind the scenes by Chuck, Steve, and Ron. However, it can't hurt to bring it up to toss around a bit.

A side comment that I made a few days ago in another thread got me to thinking that it would be great to have an outlet to offer used items for sale. Many specialized enthusiast websites have a forum for just that purpose. In the case of Muvipix, it seems that it would be a convenient way to reach others who have a need for items related to what we do, without paying listing fees. We already have a similar forum in "Business Services," where we can offer non-tangibles.

Of course transactions would have to be at the risk of the parties involved, and due caution regarding payments and such would be their responsiblity.

Comments?

It's certainly worth discussing, Dave. Let's see how others -- and our other co-founders -- feel about it.

I think this is a good idea. I think that if the decison is to allow this, then there should be a clear understanding that there is NO Muvipix responsibility other than to act as a 'pin board' just like you might find in a corner shop.

The thing that I would be concerned with is spam. This would, no doubt, open that door. As time went on, it would be hard to disseminate the spammers vs. legitimate listings (people registering just to post their goods). It would simply be hard to control.

If you have something quasi-muvipix related (hardware, software, etc.) you want to sell or want, there's no reason why you couldn't post it in the Water Cooler. AOMOF, I think we've had a few of these already. And the transactions are usually discussed further in detail via PMs. This is quite alright in my book.

I just don't think a dedicated forum would work (MO).

-Ron

Ouch! Hadn't thought of that. How do you separate the legitimate personal sales from the junk listings and even dangerous links?

What if we banned people from posting links or e-mail addresses in their listings? All sales would be handled via private messages.

I participate in another forum where posters are not allowed to post links in their messages until they've posted 5 regular messages. I would assume this is supposed to deal with the "hit and run" spammers. Would it be possible to set a software requirement that a person have to be a member for a certain time period, say a month, and post a minimum number of messages, before they can post in the For Sale forum? Another possiblity would be that it not be available to those who participate as free members - only to the paid membership levels.

Yes, good point, Ron. Maybe the 'via Water Cooler' is best.

We have similar rules Dave, users can't just start posting links right away. Even still people try to get away with things and will make a number of very quick/short posts to beat the system. Good thing is that they don't know how many times they have to post before they can include a link ;)

We have talked about a bulletin board, for sale, wanted, type of section in the past. It's kind of difficult to get organized considering we need lots of legal stuff to say we aren't responsible for any of the items, descriptions, sales, payments or anything else. Then we would have a page that you would have to click 'I Agree' every time you posted something for sale along with anyone looking at items to buy.

You can post here in the Water Cooler and work out any sale through PM or email, or you can put the item on eBay and post a link here.

I would not have a problem limiting it to paid members only. Membership has its rewards...

And, yes, I would take advantage of the service if available, although as a rule I don't trade much myself.

The subscriber and moderator only section seems like an interesting idea.
It would be nice to have some more stuff just for subscribers.

I agree, limiting it to "members" would eliminate a lot of bogus stuff.... I assume that would mean you'd need to be a member to even see it ....right ?

Not only a member but a subscriber. Regular forum members would not even see it.

I bought my Pyro from a member here. Worked out great with private emails and he did have it listed on ebay since he sells other things...action figures. Not sure if he was a subscriber here though.
