Searching in Forum - not matching right

Postby tjodork » Tue Oct 20, 2009 10:16 pm

I did a search on +pyro and +550 and it did return items that had both ......but it also returned a lot of items that had only pyro in it.
Am I doing something wrong....does this just not work >?

One thing I know is that it doesn't like numbers for searches.
Trying to enter just +550 does not return any results, so the +550 is being ignored.

It's not really a bug as much as a limitation. It gets really technical and mathematical in nature, but briefly, when searching a database, especially when they become a bit large, you don't want to allow any words/sequences under 4 characters because this is where most common words are (the, and, be, to, not, in, but, etc).

Number 1; it puts an unnecessary strain on the server's processor looking through, sometimes thousands of, common words. And 2; depending on what you're searching for, you may end up thumbing through too many unwanted posts because of the common word input. It just narrows it down better if searching for uncommon words/phrases.

Google has obviously overcome this limitation, but they can certainly afford the processing and the bandwidth :)
