Suggestion: Add a "New" to Replies

Postby Bill Hunt » Sat Sep 13, 2008 11:58 am

I looked through this sub-forum and did not see my request.

In the main pages for each forum, the "√" (checkmark) is nice and signifies a "new" post to that thread. However, when one goes to the thread, it would be nice to see a "New" flag on all new replies. On the Adobe forums (and also Chowhound), I get a bright yellow graphic with the word "New." In Muvipix, I have to read all of the last replies to see if I have already seen them. Since I am not on the site every day, it would be great to have new replies flagged.

Thanks,

Hunt

The closest I can come to that is by using the Recent Topics Toggle at the top of the forum main page.
It will show the 10 most recent replies and if you click on the little paper icon on the right it will take you directly to the most recent post in that topic.

That does only work for the 10 most recent, and if you are not viewing the forum as often as I do they tend to build up fast.
When I miss a few hours, and sometimes overnight, there get to be more than 10 new posts, then I have the same problem you have Hunt, getting to the newest post in the topic. Maybe there could be a 'Most Recent Post' icon for each topic :)

Do you know about clicking "View New Posts" on the main Board Index? It will give you a list of new posts in all topics. That is generally all that I ever use.

Gentlemen,

Thanks for those tips. I'll explore them and probably get close to what I was asking for.

One thing that I have noticed is that with some of the older sub-forums, I get the checkmark (for new/unread) on the sub-forum, but the checkmark on individual articles seems to have expired. I know that there are threads that I have not read in there, but they are no longer checked in the article headers. I guess that it's just a matter of opening each thread, until I HAVE read them all.

Personally, I like to remove all of the checkmarks (or whatever the symbol is) in all of my technical forums by reading all articles, like the Adobe forums. Then I know that any checkmark will indicate a new reply, or article. I just have some more reading to do on Muvipix.com.

Appreciated,

Hunt

Actually, there are several ways to do all of these things. It's just a matter of personal preference.

If you click on the "orange symbol", looks like this [ Image ] both at the "Recent Topics" index and in the individual forums, it will take you to the very first post that you haven't read. The white symbol [ Image ] takes you to the last post only.

Also, when entering the thread, look at the top and to the right, there's a link "First unread post" - this is the link to the first post that was submitted since you last viewed the topic. Then conversely, everything underneath that particular post is new.

For your unread posts that are all over the place, if you'd like to start fresh - meaning that when you return, you will only see the new posts since this visit - then click the link on the index page "Mark forums read" and this will clear all of those "checkmarks".

Yes, we can compare forum features all day long and that the forum over there has this and the forum over there has that, but each software just takes some getting used to and they all basically do the same thing, just in a slightly different way --- if that makes sense ::C

-Ron

How do you get back to the "View New Posts" after you go into one of the topics?
I find myself taking a lot of extra steps to get back there, maybe there is an easy way.

The recent topics has dropped down to 5 :-8 I can't live with just 5 unless there is an easier way to view the new posts :-k

Is that what the page links are for on the right under the Mark Forums Read? Are those additional Recent Posts?

Can you add Recent Topics to the Page 1 of ... text?
Otherwise it is kind of hard to know what it's for.
