Mirror or Glass Effect

Postby Bubby Grub » Tue Oct 19, 2010 5:53 pm

Hi Guys,
I hope this makes sense. Does anyone know how I can achieve say a mirror or glass effect over a series of stills.
Meaning that the pics seem to appear behind a glass window, just like natural scenery when you look out the window.
My hubby has suggested green screen, would that be the way to go.
Thanks in advance.

I know that with Blender you can create a frame that has glass transparency along with a glass reflection. Once creating the frame with those properties you could export it as a jpeg, bitmap, or png file. Being that it's transparent you could just overlay it on the photo.

Well, if your window is clean, you won't even notice the glass, Bubby!

Can you post a link to a video that uses this effect or show us a still photo of what you're trying to accomplish?

You can certainly add a frame over your video that looks like you're looking through a window. And there is likely a filter or effect you can place over the photo to make it look like there's a pane of glass between you and your slides. I'm just not clear what you're trying to make it look like.

Are you trying to make it look like the photos are sitting outside your window and you're seeing your own reflection in the window as you look at them? If not, what would be partially reflected in the glass?

I'm sorry. I'm just getting what you're trying to make it look like, Bubby.

Hi Steve,
Sorry I don't always make myself over clear, just ask my hubby. I can't include a sample, it was just an idea I came up with. Your line below is what I am looking for. So question how do I do it?
Thanks for the help

I am really liking this idea :)

Just thinking out loud;

You could take a picture of a window frame, any frame that you find on the internet or use a photo that you already have. Then cut out the glass making that area transparent and save as a photoshop PSD file.

Import that into Premiere Elements and place on track 3, add a color matte (try different colors to see what works best, probably a very light blue or maybe green) on track 2 that you have lowered the opacity to about 10% (maybe less) and you can add a bit of a blur effect, maybe a lens flare of some kind all added to the color matte. Then finally add your image to show behind the glass on track 1 and adjust the size and position.

Sounds like a really great idea and I might just steal this for a tutorial :)

Thank you Chuck. At least you didn't laugh at me like my "other half". I'll certainly work on your idea a little later in the day. We tried a green screen effect yesterday taking a picture of our Lounge Room sliding door with curtains each side, but unfortunately it wasn't square and it didn't work out.
But your idea sounds really good.
Thanks to all who have helped.
I'll let you all know if it works out. Otherwise I may be asking for more help.
Thanks again.
P.S. Chuck I'll let you use the effect but don't forget the royalties. Ha! Ha! . . . But I will try charging my Hubby if he want's to use it. You can imagine that!!!!!

I just did a quick Google search for "window" and there are some great options out there that could be used for this effect;
Google Results for "Window" large images only

I think just looking at some of these will give you ideas about how they could be used :)

Thanks Chuck for the site and help.
There is certainly a lot of great ideas there.
I did some work on it yesterday with a photo I took and also one I found on the net, but my Keyframing needs a little work, but later today I will study the site you gave me for ideas.
Let you know eventually the outcome.
By the way, my other half told me to tell all that he put Win 7 Ultimate on his older machine yesterday, and it is running great at this stage.
Thanks to all for the help on that thread also.
Thanks once again.

Hi Chuck,
Just an update on this effect, at this stage "NO GO", I have tried your suggestions, but nothing seems to look right, even the window frame looks just like a square box so to speak. I must be missing something, I definitely know I am.
Any further help or suggestions would be ever "SO WELCOME"
I am good at coming up with these great ideas but seem to have trouble implementing them.
Thanks again.

Hi Bubby,
Here is somewhat of an example from one of our contests
http://muvipix.com/cpg/albums/userpics/ ... stvids.swf

Click on the list tab and then scroll down to "Log Home".
That short video has a couple of examples similar to what I was thinking.
I will try to put something together this weekend.

This tut is for making the CSI sliding glass look. This isn't exactly what you are looking for, but you could add some blur or other filters to make it appear that is glass. And you could make a psd with a few random white streaks with feather & lower the opacity to appear as window glare.

Hi Chuck & Everyone who has helped.

Just an update on my Mirror Effect, I am pleased to say with lot of playing around I have finally achieved what I had in mind. Thanks to Chuck and all for help and suggestions, and a little of my own imagination it finally came together.
Unfortunately I cannot show a sample as this project is in memory of my Brother, and I am afraid his wife and family would not be too happy about having their photos on the internet.
Anyway thanks once again what a great site this is. Look forward to your idea and tutorial Chuck when you have the time.
Thank you

Glad to hear you got the effect to work, Bubby! We'd love to see the results, even with "fake" footage sometime!
