Is h.264 the same as mpeg4

Postby demalibu » Tue Sep 14, 2010 7:12 am

Me again.
The client wants mpeg4 at 8mb/s at 1024x576.
I can change the advanced setting OK for bitrate and size but where does it make the export a mpeg 4?? Do I use the h.264 preset to start with?
Thanks

Well, for the most part, yes. Using the H.264 setting will produce an MP4.

But MP4s can have a wide range of compression and quality settings -- depending on whether your client wants something to view online or watch on a computer in hi-def or watch on an iPod or iPhone or if he plans to use it as source material in a hi-def video project. So be sure to ask him what he plans to do with it.

It's not enough to be sure what flavor MPEG4 it is by the designation mpeg4 alone. It could be h.264 or h.263. If you don't see "AVC" or "H.264" printed next to MPEG-4, then it is most likely the h.263 flavor. The trend these days is to use the AVC/h.264 flavor. That is what YouTube uses in FLV video files.
