System requirements?

Postby Svein Berger » Wed Sep 03, 2008 6:36 am

Hi,

I need to upgrade my hadware and have a few questions regarding what I need.
I can see at Adobes site, on PE7 system requirements page http://www.adobe.com/products/premiereel/systemreqs/ that I need a 3GHZ processor to edit HDV (Canon HV20). Is this a single core processor?

I have looked at a system with Intel Q9300 (Quad 2.5GHZ), and 4GB RAM.
Does this means that I have to by a system with a more powerful processor? I do not have an unlimited budget :(

Please advise me to pick a system that meet my needs.

Thanks
Svein

No, Svein. You don't need a 3 ghz dual-core. That 3 ghz minimum is for Pentium.

But I would recommend at least a 2 ghz dual-core to edit HDV -- and probably 4 gigs of RAM -- to edit HDV. So that system you're looking at has plenty of power to do that kind of work!

You don't say if you're going to be buying an XP or Vista machine. But, particularly if Vista, I recommend some tweaking to get the most power out of your computer.

The middle of the road machine in this article will be able to edit HDV
viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1640

...but the bigger the better :)

My Dell Precision is great at editing HDV, but it cost over $2600 at the Dell Outlet (refurbished).
You can pick up a brand new Dell XPS for under $1000 that will work, or you can build your own.
There are a few members that have built their own and are always willing to help :)

I just picked up an HP end of line system unit for Mrs Twosheds.

Basic spec was 2Gb RAM, Q6600 2.4GHz quad core, 500Gb SATA HDU.

Including UK taxes it was a comparative snip for £385 - about 1/3 the price of my self build earlier this year!!. :-D

Thanks all.

I will check the Vista tweaking, Steve. I use Vista on my current system.

The system I'm looking at has:
    Intel Q9300 (Quad 2.5GHZ) processor
    4GB RAM
    nVidia GeForce 9600GT video card
    2x500GB hard disk
    Blue-ray/DVD recorder
    7.1 sound card
    Windows Vista Home Premium
    24" Fujitsu Siemens Wide screen monitor (1920 x 1200)

In short Fujitsu Siemens SCALPI2680E01
The price in Norway is approx. $1800 (10.000 NOK)
Yes, I know, expensive (But Norway is an expensive country)

I hope this is a fairly good coice.

Does PE works better with XP? I thought that Vista was better on multi core CPU's

All of my PCs are XP but there are a number of forum members using Vista. I suppose it is all down to personal preference - my preference for now is XP.

The HP unit I mentioned in the posting above came with Vista pre-installed so I installed XP on the machine but left HP factory restore partition untouched so we can revert to Vista later if we decide to.

As an aside, the XP installation meant that I didn't have to spend hours getting rid of the bloatware. :-D

I saw a new Microsoft commercial the other day, a bunch of people that have never seen a computer before saying how much they liked Vista.
Only they told them it was Mojave, not Vista, and they may have seen a computer before but I doubt it.

Wow, they are really trying to get people to think they will like the switch

Hi Svein.

What it really boils down to is time - your time. On an older PC like my original PC (a Pentium IV 3.0 MHz with 2GB of RAM) it might take 2x to 2.5x the time to render a DVD image. That means for a 1 hour DVD, it might take 2 or 2 and 1/2 hours to render. I got into the habit of doing these runs overnight.

So I got a new system with Q9450 and 2GB (soon to be 4GB) and it sped up the process significantly. A test run that took 21 minutes on the old took less than 4 on the new.

You can never have too much power. Of course we all seek the correct price / performance point, but remember that the bottom line is how much you are going to have to wait. Buy accordingly.

Hi all,

I just bought the Fujitsu Siemens PC with Q9300 and 4GB RAM, and it's really fast compared to my old one.
My old pc had more or less the same spec. as Bob's.

I can't wait to import a HDV tape to see how fast it is compared to the old one. (Well the old PC really had big problems editing HD video)

Thank's all for your help.
