If your playback is smooth, you don't really need to render.

Whoever said "What you don't know won't hurt you," obviously hasn't spent nearly as many wasted hours playing MahJong and Solitaire while rendering as I have!!!

I usually edit at 1/4 and take a peek every once in a while at full in the ~ section to see if my footage is okay.

I think I've finally got the text line I want. A light grey (cccccc) with a close fitting, sharp drop shadow. I cut out the underbar in my Title text because the heavier lines in the title made it appear to be more saturated than the rest of the title. Saved as a .psd file and yes, I have figured out how to go directly from PrePro to Photoshop to edit the title tool.

Thanks SO MUCH to everyone! No rendering necessary. Who woudlda' thought?
