VHS-C Tape Capture

Postby John 'twosheds' McDonald » Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:46 am

I have a job where I need to capture about six or so VHS-C tapes and put the captured video onto DVD. No problem with that but the files, as I am capturing, have extreme 'jaggies'.

Whilst capturing, which will take me most of today (ahh! the joys of tape and real-time capture :???: ) I can't 'experiment' to see how best to tone down the jaggies, so if anyone has some experience with this I would appreciate it.

My first though would be de-interlace but I'm not sure how that will affect the clips as the 'jaggies' are very severe. The job has to be complete by Saturday...

What device are you using to digitize them, John? I assume it's something like an ADS Pyro AV Link or Canopus AVDC.

If so, I wouldn't judge the quality by what I see on my computer. Try outputting a test DVD. Chances are that, when played on an interlaced device like a TV, the video will look as good as the original.

Hope so Steve. I'll try that when I have finished the captures - three more tapes to go.

I am using pass through on my old Canon SD camera. Unfortunately the VHS-C tapes were recorded at LP speed so a 45 minute tape is playing for 130 minutes. VHS poor quality made even worse!!

Ah well. Never mind.... :???:

Sounds like it might be time for Neat Video:

Hi Peru. I have Neat Video but what I am seeing isn't noise. When there is motion on the video the interlacing artefacts are very severe (I can't post a sample just now).

I'll see how I get on with the de-interlace option I mentioned above and I will also try Steve's suggestion of a sample DVD to see if the effect is cleared. Hopefully it is just an issue that is made more prominent during capture rather than straight DVD playback. [-o<

EDIT: Yup. Just a capture phenomenon. Yippee!!! :yh:

I think that is the problem. I transferred a dozen at one time for a friend. The tapes on LP looked bad, but the tapes recorded at SP looked decent.
