Ripple Edit Confusion (edited)

Postby Jayell » Mon Nov 21, 2011 12:23 pm

I’m a little confused. When inserting a video clip on track #1 (using CNTL while dragging the clip into place), one track of music splits and separates where the video track was inserted (track 6), but the other music track does not (track 3).

At the insertion point the tracks are as follows:
Video on tracks 1 & 3
Music (unrelated to video) on audio tracks 3 & 6
Video track #4 was targeted, as was Audio track #5

So why do music tracks 3 & 6 behave differently?!

Hi Jayell,
The insertion of clips reacts differently depending on if you hold the Ctrl key, The ALT key or no keys when selecting, dragging and dropping clips. It also will behave differently depending on if you hold the Ctrl or ALT keys before or after you select the clip. There is a tutorial on the drag and drop behavior depending on what keys are pressed when, have you seen that tutorial? I'm sure that one of the combinations will do what you want, just need to find the right one. When all else fails it is sometimes easier to move everything out of the way, drop the clip and then move everything back. But you should be able to find a way to do it using the Ctrl or ALT keys, check out the tutorial and see if you can find what will work for you.

Thanks for the reference tutorial, Chuck. I am familiar with those concepts, which is why I was so confused that my normal routine was suddenly not working.

After reviewing my notes (what a concept, huh?) I realized I had the sync lock toggle off on some tracks and on for others .. which answers my question as to why two identical type tracks responded differently. :sh:

I thought you already had all of that down pretty good, but you never know what someone may forget about over time :)

Glad you got it figured out, I temporarily forgot that you had moved to Premiere Pro now.

I always appreciate tips, Chuck. I often go several weeks between working on projects, which is plenty of time (for me) to forget the basics.

When in doubt, you can always check the thread headings. Sorry, I couldn't pass that up.
