Convert file format but keep transparency

Postby Jayell » Mon Nov 07, 2011 3:28 pm

Trying to convert one of the new Muvipix transparent motion elements from an MOV file (which does not play well in my timelines) to any other format which will maintain the transparency. I've tried a few, played with a few settings, done a little research .. but always lose the transparency. How do I do this?! :???:

.. using Premiere Pro CS5

I looked at one of the motion elements and it was using motion jpeg 2000 for the codec. That may be the root of the problem. You can try exporting as quicktime using the animation codec which is one of the few codecs that support transparency. You'll need to set the depth in the export dialog to 32bit.

Isn't Quicktime a MOV file? It already IS an MOV file .. I'm trying to get it to anything OTHER than an MOV file.

MOV is a container format similar to AVI. It only defines how the contents are stored within the file. The contents are defined by the codec. You can place many different codecs within either container format and some will perform better than others. Your existing mov file uses a motion jpeg 2000 codec which isn't performing well, I'm suggesting you try the animation codec to see if it performs any better.

You can also skip codecs entirely and output the file as a sequence of stills, then import that sequence as a video. I don't know that that will help much and uses a boatload of storage. You can try that if you wish.

Is your project SD? If so & the motion element is HD then it may bog things down.

Now I understand (just repeat it a few more times and I'll really get it) That codec stuff always confuses me. I'll give it a try.

I am working in an HD project. But thanks for thinking of that issue.

Yes, Bob, this did work. I can now place it on the timeline, make changes to it .. and my timeline doesn't choke everytime I play through it. Thanks!
