Computer/domain Hosting

Postby Jayell » Thu Oct 29, 2009 2:54 pm

I'd like to purchase website hosting for my current domain. Is there any advantage to either Linux vs Windows hosting? My needs are V-E-R-Y minimal. I just want some space where I can display photos and maybe a couple videos for Mom and a few friends, rather than having to email things. My Webdesign skills have gotten fairly rusty, but I use Dreamweaver. My current Domain is with GoDaddy. I've always had the Linux package in the past, but I have no understanding of why I would prefer one over the other. Help!

Not really any advantage to Linux if you are not running any web applications that really suck resources from the server.
I have used Yahoo Web Hosting for years, their packages are very reasonable and they have never caused me any problems. I have not put anything too intensive on them however.

At Muvipix we have a service this is a bit more beefy, but with that comes a higher price tag.

Stick with Windows, there is no reason to switch for a small web site.

Anyone that has other experience or reasons why a Linux environment would be better please chime in, I would be interested in hearing too.

If your needs are modest sometimes the cost is less on a Linux host. Here is what I use; $1.95 per month payable yearly at $23.40 - cheap! Works.

Wow! .. that is cheap, Ken. Where do you host?
At GoDaddy Linux & Windows are the same: $4+ for the economy depending on your comittment period.

Either there is some confusion here or you inadvertently asked the wrong question. I posted my hosting company previously. The domain names I use have been purchased from GoDaddy and SSLcatacombNetworking.com. https://www.securepaynet.net/default.aspx?prog_id=sslcatacomb Both now have prices in the 9-10 dollar range.

Four dollars a month is quite economical for hosting but $1.95 - well, that still seems to be the bargain to beat. Getting both from the same company can make things simpler but seldom gets you the best price fro each. So I always shop for the best price. At one time GoDaddy sold domains for about six dollars.

I suppose any of us have our favorites, but I can say that I have used APlus - http://www.aplus.net - for many years now. Excellent performance and support and I highly recommend them. As to price, I don't think they try to be the bleeding edge leader, but if you buy too cheap sometimes you get what you pay for.

GoDaddy in particular can tick me off because everything seems optional - Oh, you want SEATS and a STEERING WHEEL with that car? Well, that raises the price...

I've been with GoDaddy for several years. Their pricing charts look pretty much like everyone elses .. but I am interested in other folks' experiences. Thanks!
