local area connection

Postby hpharley90 » Mon Aug 18, 2008 4:51 pm

I've got a friends PC that I concluded has a bad Ethernet card.
I'll be putting the new one in tomorrow.

When I open network connections I see 2 local area connection. One is numbered 2 and the other is 7.
Only one of the connections works. Number 2.

On my three computers I only have one listing for local area connection.
That is the way I think it should be.

How can I delete the connection that does not work so that there is no confusion on the users part? [-o<
There is no delete option that I can find. When I right click "delete" is grayed out.

Thanks
Rich
Thanks
Richard

There is no direct 1-1 relationship between logical connections in Network Connections and physical adapters.

You probably can't delete because they are considered "active".

When you put in the new card and configure it, a new connection should appear. You should then be able to delete the old ones.

Keep us posted.

I just got and installed Ethernet card. Ran software. No problem.
It said this is local connection 8.
This is an D-Link card.
The other one was Realtek.
The Realtek local area connection is still there but says a cable is unplugged when you enable the connection.
I guess because there is no card.
So to eliminate any confusion on my friends part as to what connection to use.. I renamed the old connection" DO NOT USE."
Other than that it works fine.
I wish there was a way to delete it.
But their getting the tower back tomorrow so its a finished job. :-D
Thanks
Rich.
Thanks
Richard

Strange. For you to see the "no cable" error, the adapter would have to detect the lack of the phantom current in the cable, and report that back to the CPU. If the adapter itself is not present, you would get a different error and you probably shouldn't see the icon in network connection either.

I just got back from a week away and facing a lot of backed up work, but I will try to get back when I can.

Did you right click and select Delete on the old network connection?

Yes, but delete is grayed out. Either with connection enabled or disabled. Just to be clear I only get "cable unplugged" error when enabled.

Anyway job is done and tower is gone.

Friend is very happy. :-D
$14.00 dollar fix.
Thanks
Richard
