Problem with itunes

Postby Doreen L. » Mon Mar 12, 2007 7:46 pm

I've used itunes to burn CD-rw successfully in my Dell 8200 and LG internal burner for years.

My XPS410 came with a Samsung DVD burner (TSST TS-H653A). I can burn a CD without any problem. However, if I try burning a CD-rw, I get the error message: unknown burning error 2630. I used a Memorex CD-rw and then an Imation CD-rw. Both came up with the same error. The exact disks worked successfully in my other computer. I called Dell support and after an hour (it was actually two hours. We spent the first on the two replacement hard drives they were supposed to send. Somehow the order was cancelled) we could burn a CD-rw but not in itunes. Any suggestions? I checked the itunes support and googled 'error 2630' but came up with nothing.

BTW, one of the suggestions from itunes was to check the ATA/ATAPI controllers in Device Manager. This was not listed. Can that be?

I know it's a non-answer, Doreen, but can you burn a disk from Windows Media Player?

I know that doesn't solve your problem because you can't read the iTunes music with WMP, but at least it would tell you if the problem was with your burner or iTunes.

Have you updated to the latest version of iTunes? I know there was just a large update the other day, maybe it has a problem.

I have itunes 7 on both computers. I thought that might be the problem too. I even uninstalled and reinstalled itunes to see if there might have been a problem with the installation but I still have the same problem.

So you only get this error when burning -RW discs in iTunes? Windows Media Player will burn them fine? Do you have RecordNow or EasyCD Creator that you could try? You can burn -R discs though right?

Very confusing, it may be that you need a firmware upgrade for the burner. I know that my DVD burner on my new Dell 8300 wouldn't work until I downloaded and installed a firmware update from Philips at the Dell site. You could try checking for updated drivers and firmware, firmware is the most important.

Okay, this is weird. I can burn a CD-RW in Windows Media Player - no problem. After I burned in WMP, I reinserted the disk and opened with itunes. Itunes will play the disk but.....the songs so not show up on the list of what's being played. It shows the last song that I used itunes to burn a regular CD.

I checked for updates and I can't even find the website for this burner. Dell had one update for the burner which I downloaded and installed.

Sure sounds like an iTunes problem. Open iTunes and go to Help/About iTunes, what version does it say you have?

Mine shows version 7.1.0.59, there is also a CD driver and CD driver DLL version listed but we can worry about those later. It may be that the last update didn't install correctly.

I'm not sure about iTunes, but the latest Quicktime upgrade has had problems. People have reported that after the update they couldn't play Quicktime videos embedded in web pages.

Can you burn a regular CD from iTunes?

It really does sound like the CDRW media is just not compatible with that burner.

BTW, I've found that RW's deteriorate faster than R's. Just 2 cents worth.

Is it a brand new disc or are you re-using an old one?

So the burner can burn the -RWs, it is just iTunes with the problem.

Yep, both the Memorex and Imation were new disks. It's got to be something with itunes because they do burn fine when I used WMP to burn a CD-RW. I thought the diagnostic was saying the drive was empty (wrong drive) but it actually says that blank media is in the drive (a CD-RW).

Meantime, the tech from Dell is supposed to be here after 3pm to change the hard drives. He said that he can't transfer my data from the hard drive that's installed in the new computer. He will leave the disk with me and I have two weeks to transfer everything over. I have no idea of how I'm supposed to do that. I think I have any new files I created on the XPS transferred over to the Dell 8200. I'll let my husband deal with it when he gets home Friday.
