Machine slowness

Postby BuddyB » Sat Mar 27, 2021 11:25 am

I'm not sure I really have an issue my pc within the last little bit has slowed down considerably. I have 8 gigs of RAM and it has never been Speedy Gonzales, but it has really slowed. My question is might it be too much stuff in Startup? I have a loaded Taskbar with apps. I just have no idea what be the cause of the slowness. I'm adding 8 gigs to give me 16, but I'm not sure if that will change things considerably or not. My machine has never been quite this slow, and other than that it runs fine. Any ideas or thoughts, as usual, are greatly appreciated.

It's a Terrabyte withe 385 gigs free. Didn't think about that possibility.

OK - So we're talking about a 10 year old processor here so things as you say are never going to be very quick. However the question is what is slowing you down. There's no point getting more memory if you're not using the memory you have and 8GB should be enough for basic tasks.

When you say "slow" - doing what? Starting a particular program etc?

Some basic maintenance may also help - have a look in the machine and check that the fans are not very dusty and that they all spin easily (and do spin when the machine starts up)

The next stop would be task manager (right click the task bar and select "task manager" and then click "More Details").

On the "Performance" tab some things to check. (But a screenshot of it might help) The values are usually given as a percentage.
1) How much memory are you using?
2) How busy is the Disk?
3) How busy is the processor?

If one of those is high then clicking on the processes tab and selecting the one that's high will order the processes in order of resource usage. If there's a process that is using a lot of resource then that might be your issue.

In terms of breathing new life into an old machine replacing your mechanical drive with an SSD will probably make the biggest difference to machine responsiveness. A 1TB SSD is about the $100 mark these days.

That's useful info; time to get to work. Thanks guys for your input. I means more to me than you might realize. When I say "slow" I mean doing anything/everything, from a 10 to 15 minute boot to opening an app, or doing anything in the app, say Adobe Illustrator, email, etc.

What are you doing for antivirus/antimalware protection Buddy? That's a terribly long boot time. I've solved many a problem like this with client's machines by purging them of malware.

Thanks Dave that's something for me to check. Opening Task Mgr, and I'm not sure I know what I'm reading, but it appears my machine is using only 4 gigs of the 8 gigs I have installed. I'm enclosing a shot. Let me know if I'm right. Thanks

That screenshot shows that only 4GB of your 8GB RAM (if you in fact have 8GB of RAM installed) is being recognized.
Is all of the RAM in the correct slots on the mobo?

Defiantly check what's going on with your RAM - You can see that the HDD is also at 100% which is probably because the machine is paging data to it. This will slow it down considerably.

Hi Buddy, Like Peru Bob and Chris I also see the memory problem. The screen shot shows that there is memory of 4 GB in only 1 slot being recognized. The most common problem is that additional memory is not installed in the correct slot. Be sure to check your documentation. In a 4 slot motherboard the memory slots most often do not allow you to add memory to consecutive slots but rather skip a slot. So if you have 4 slots, 1,2,3,4, and you have 2 memory modules of 4 gb each they would go in slots 1 and 3 (not 1 and 2). This is a common mistake and moving the memory to the correct slot will usually resolve the problem. If that is not the case, or moving to the correct slot does not solve the problem, then the memory may be bad. That also happens at times.

Sorry it has taken so long to reply, but the Motherboard died. Got to get a new computer. Borrowed this one. Thanks Chuck and all. It's good info; never thought of that.

Thanks Chuck, I'll survive; ordered a Dell Precision T1650 4-Core Xeon Wi and a 1 Tb solid state drive; hope that will be a winner.

Thanks Chuck that makes me feel better about the purchase. I've had nothing but ASUS for years, but can't afford the one I want. I will have 16 gigs of RAM; more than I've had before. Hopefully this will make me more productive. :TU:
