Install Op sys over Illegitimate One

Postby BuddyB » Sat Apr 11, 2020 2:23 pm

I have a Lenovo computer that I'm working on for a friend. It has an illegitimate version of Win 7 and I would like to install Win10/64 on it for him. I would presume I'd need to put the software on DVD to do the install. Please, I do not want to install another illegite app on his computer. I'm checking some of those on eBay; some have OEM on them; have done a lot of stuff on my computer with reasonable sucsess, but I've never installed an op, nor over-installed on an existing sys. Thoughts appreciated..as usu

As far as the operating system goes, it's pretty much put the disc in and follow the prompts.

You may need to update or install some drivers afterword, especially if it is a laptop. Make sure Windows 10 drivers are available. Don't forget to check if printer or other external device drivers are available for Windows 10. I would search for and download the drivers to an external drive before beginning the installation. You may need to get the drivers directly from Lenovo.

Also, have all of the program installation files (including updates) and/or discs ready in case you need to reinstall the applications.

What model Lenovo is it Buddy, I've done Windows 10 installs on a few of them with great success and no driver issues at all. Although Peru is correct, there can be some issues with drivers depending on how old the computer is. When you do the Windows 10 install it will probably format the entire drive, everything on it will be wiped out. If there is anything important on the drive make sure you back it up first. In general there is nothing wrong with an OEM version of software, just need to get it from a trusted source.

Thanks guys. Chuck, it's a Lenovo ThinkCenter, Model 3238F8U. I've never seen one of these before. It has 4 gigs of RAM and it's not fast; will try to upgrade to 8. I guess to get into this thing I'll have to unscrew the plate on the bottom of the box.

It's actually not a bad little computer, came out in 2012 and has a i5 processor, memory can be upgraded to a max of 16GB. An upgrade to 8 would be good and shouldn't be too expensive. I have attached the manual, it shows how to take off the cover and how to change out the memory modules.
