USB hard drive files "gone"!

Postby GerryB » Sun Feb 23, 2020 5:56 am

I have a 4TB USB external HD and I can no longer 'see' the files which I think are still on the disc.
I was transferring video (OSX) files to the HD when it all stopped.
I have tried several different 'things' to try and recover the ExFAT but to no avail. I even downloaded a supposed 5* app and this failed.
Plugging the HD into a Windows PC I get the option to format the drive, as if new. I declined!
There is about 40GB+ of videos, no pics, docs, spreadsheets.
Just videos on the HD.

Any pointers as to how to recover?
Much appreciated.

Gerry, Sorry you are having issues. I had this happen in the past too. Couple of things to try.

1. Try and plug the USB connector into a different outlet on the computer. This has helped in the past for me.

2. If that doesn't work I used a piece of software from EaseUS called Data Recovery.

https://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywiza ... ftware.htm

Here is the process:
Select a location and start scanning. Launch EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, hover on the partition where you lost data, then click "Scan".
Preview and select the files. Wait until the scanning completes. ...
Recover lost data. Click "Recover", choose a location to save the recovered data, then click "OK".

The recovery wizard works great :TU:

Also a Windows Error Checking will sometimes help.

Wasn't there a recent Windows update that caused files to vanish?

Apologies for the delay in responding.

I will try easeus.com
At the moment I have "nothing to loose"!

Interesting about Windows update but my "loss" occurred on an iMac - coincidence?

EaseUS found zero files.

I had that happen to a WD My Book drive a while back. Fortunately, it was under warranty and I also had backup files that I could copy over to another external drive.

So it does happen. :(
