Hi Mom!

When I want to put a new system together I begin by selecting the best chip for value within my budget. I'm sure someone can point you to a link around here.

Once I have the main motherboard chip, can't remember the exact name, I hunt for motherboards that work with that chip. That will take you to RAM that works with the chip/motherboard combination. I max out RAM if I can. If I cannot, I try to buy the largest size RAM sticks that will fit, say filling a quarter or half the RAM and then later use the largest size RAM sticks to fill remaining slots.

Once you have a group of motherboards to choose from you can compare to see how much room is available for various kinds of hard drives. Video cards are really important too. At some level, video editing programs need video cards that have the ability to carry some of the workload for the main motherboard chip.

Oh, of course you need to have a case that will be the right size to hold the motherboard...

I've assembled my last two desktops by working with this company using the 'bare bones' package.

http://www.adamant.com/

I purchased some components from them, I think I had the motherboard and maybe the cooler installed by them and maybe some other items. I know I purchased some/maybe all of the hard drives from Amazon, New Egg, Adorama, etc. My motherboard is ASUS and they have a pretty good installation manual.

Sorry I can't remember exact names of what kind of video card, those super fast hard drives that are good to have as the C drive, etc., but the old grey mare ain't what she used to be.

Happy editing!

Paz

Thanks Paz for the tips! Lots to keep in mind with a new build.

I agree with Paz. Build your own. It isn't as daunting as you might believe. It will certainly save some $$$s.

Whenever I try to think about building my own it always comes out to be more expensive than if I purchase a pre-built system, why is that :conf: ::C :ha:
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Yes, it does seem daunting.

I am still researching which I do better than building. Over research. :-8

I found someone to build for me and he is working up a bid.

I look at it like buying a bicycle. I suppose I could build my own -- but I prefer to buy it up, running and complete and then maybe customize a thing or two.

Different strokes for different folks. Which ever way you go -self build or buy already built - obviously the key condideration is that whatever you chose does the job that you want it to do. :)

I looked online at a few places and saw what I could get at my price point. I had a meeting with the builder last night and he is going to fine tune a few options. Looks like it will come in on my budget. I'll post back a few specs when I get the final bid. Thanks for everyone's input!

It does come down to personal preference like pies. I like crusts from scratch and can't eat the premade stuff. :-D

Great advice! I do regular backups. Cleaning up files now that I want to transfer to the new build.
