External Questions

Postby momoffduty » Fri Sep 09, 2016 10:17 am

I have 2 of the Buffallo 2TB for backup rotation. I'm looking for a new external for media storage and thought about this 3TB. One review said it will not work with Windows 10. I have Windows 7 and looking at the future if/when I move to Windows 10 there may be problems. Thoughts?

The software that comes with the drive does not work on Windows 10 but the drive will work. I don't like the reviews however, only 58% at 5 stars and lots of bad comments. You might want to find something from Toshiba or Seagate.

I don't use the Buffalo software. I have 2 and the software only works when you 1 external. I called support awhile back so using EaseUS and works great. It was Peru maybe who recommended the EaseUS.

I'll look into the links Chuck & Sidd. Thanks

I found comparison. Looks like the Seagate is good.

The speed is 5400 rpm. My other 2 for back up is 7200. For backup I format the drive and then transfer all the files again so the speed does benefit. For storage I would only be transferring files the initial time and then add as I need space. Quote from the page:

How Important Is Drive Speed?
While a 7,200rpm drive is inherently faster than a 5,400rpm drive, the true answer would be "it depends." If you are transferring lots of files over a speedy interface like eSATA (fast), USB 3.0/USB-C (faster), or Thunderbolt (fastest), then by all means go for the 7,200rpm drive. But if you're limited to USB 2.0 or FireWire 400/800, then I would trade speed for capacity and get the largest 5,400rpm drive that your budget allows.

Drive speed is really important especially for big files. BUT..... I had a 5400 bare drive that I put in a USB 3.0 case and the whole thing was really quick. I was only using for storage not editing. I think whatever you decide to get try to get something with USB 3.0 (provided your machine is 3.0 compatible)

I have a 3.0 USB. The Seagate Expandable desktop version has a 1 year warranty and the Seagate portable has a 2 year warranty. About the same price. Anything else I should consider between the two?

USB 3.0 requires a powered USB port. Since I have a couple of USB drives I needed to get a powered USB port to plug my portable drives in.

Something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Por ... d+usb+port

Doesn't make a lot of difference how fast the drive spins if the connection is slow, USB 2.0 will be slower than 3.0 ... It think it makes a bigger difference when the drive is internal rather than external.

Definitely correct. Internal will be SATA, which is similar in speed to USB 3.0. USB 3.0 is MUCH, MUCH faster than USB 2.

I bought this drive a while back. It's been working fine for me so far.

I think I have narrowed down my search. The portable looks like it is in the lead. Thanks for all the suggestions

I went with the Seagate that Chuck recommended 4TB. After reading too many reviews and overheating on other units, I think this one will be good. Thanks for all of the suggestions. :)
