MS Sound Mapper issue

Postby BuddyB » Sun Apr 13, 2014 2:08 pm

I have a Quad and decent amount of RAM. I do mult-task, but this issue has only begun to happen in recent days. The sound goes away, and when I try to play something I get a requester that states, "Microsoft Sound Mapper cannot be found." When I reboot everything is back to normal. Any thoughts on why this might be happening? Thanks.

MS Sound Mapper acts like a virtual playback device. Generally, you won't see this message unless something is set to use this virtual device for playback. Check your audio applications to make sure you've selected your sound card or audio device for playback instead of MS Sound Mapper. Check the system audio configuration in the control panel too. I've also heard of this happening on a laptop when the power settings turn off some of the functions after a while to save battery power.

This would be a good time to check that you have the latest audio drivers for your card.

Bob, have done that, with one exception. When I go into Audio Studio and preferences/audio tab it doesn't give me anything but MS stuff, and it doesn't allow me to go up the tree to click on my sound card. BTW it has the latest driver.

Open Device Manager and expand the Sound, video and games entry. Is your audio card listed? Are there any error or warning flags?

It's not clear why you can't see your audio card in Audio Studio. You can try setting the Audio Studio audio preference to one of the other possible selections if any make sense.

Sound Mapper is part of Windows.

No, everything looks the way it should in Device Manager, no warning tags and the right devices show. I'm going to call Sony about this. Thanks.
