Still once again got burned by Windows Update

Postby George Tyndall » Mon Oct 07, 2013 12:45 pm

As I am sure Steve recalls, I am famous--infamous?--for regularly having problems with updating my various machines.

Because I have been burned so many times, I installed Rollback-RX on my XP machine; however, last I checked it is not yet available for the machine in my signature.

As a result, I adhere to the following:
--always create a System Restore point before updating anything
--regular make mirror images of my C Drive with Acronis
--periodically clone my C drive, using Acronis, to a second internal drive

Here's what happened most recently:

After installing, if memory serves, about 11 "recommended" Windows upates--not IE10 and none of the "optional" ones--when I re-booted, the machine took a very long time to get to the Win7's 4 colors and then another long time to get to my login screen, then a very long time to get to the desktop, which would then disappear into blackness after perhaps 30 seconds.

By repeatedly restarting over a 30-minute time period, I eventually got to the point where I could select to restore to the point where I had installed the Windows updates, whereupon I clicked Next and the desktop promptly dissappeared once again into darkness.

Perhaps 10 minutes later, my desktop did reappear and did not immediately re-disappear.

I had to shut down to go out. Will update this post later.

George, I don't know which witch doctor you crossed but, man, did he put a wicked curse on your machine!

I'm so sorry for your troubles. Both my Windows 7 and my Windows 8 computers are so self-maintaining now that I barely even think about maintenance anymore.

Occassionally I run a registry tuner and spyware sweep -- and, OF COURSE, I let my auto-backup run every week. But other than that, they've never had so much as a hiccup. And I take ALL the updates.

I haven't done windows updates in my main editing machine in almost two years. I don't keep it connected to the internet, however.

If it isn't broken...

Me, too.

The problem machine is my online machine, which I do try to keep up to date.

Here is the sequence of events:

Muvipix re Restore.JPG

Note that 23 updates were removed (after scrolling through the list).

I'm confused by the statement that Office 2010 SP1 will be deleted but SP2 will be restored.

When Windows re-notifies me that I've got updates, should I add them one by one and then restart after each-- -- to be sure all is well before adding another?

Do I need to create a System Restore point--  -- before each addition?

It's happened with multiple machines, Steve, so the curse must be on me, ya think?

Windows Update informed me I hasd 30 "critical" updates to install.

First, I created a new mirror image of my C drive with Acronis.

Next, after creating a Restore Point prior to each installation, I installed the updates in small groups.

Result: At this point all seems well.

Conclusion: My Windows is like a small baby that can ingest only a teaspoon at a time, wheras Steve's kids have already graduated to solid food with forks.
