Canon HV40 not recognized by Dell XP

Postby tubebuzzer » Wed Oct 24, 2012 10:28 pm

Hello,

I recently purchased my first real video camera, a Canon HV40 as I am interested in film making. My laptop is a Dell Lattitude running windows xp with service pack 3. The firewire connection seems to be functioning as I can get movie through NCH Video Pad - but the sound is off sync and the video runs in slow motion when played back.

I have been reading online that I need HDV Split (downloaded that) and I downloaded ffdshow - however for the life of me I can't figure out how to set these programs up. I also read that Service Pack three could be the problem, however all the tutorials online on how to remove SP3 have been unsuccessful.

Would anyone out there be able to lend a hand and point me in the right direction.

Thank you.

Hi Tubebuzzer and welcome to Muvipix. :wcm:

My initial thoughts - is the video file AVCHD?.

If so, it could be that your laptop just isn't powerful enough to handle that video format. Can you confirm the video format and also provide a little more info on the laptop specs - CPU, RAM, free HD space.

I agree with John. How fast is your computer's processor?

HDV is generally a pretty a trouble-free format. But, if you're trying to edit it on a Pentium 4 with 2 gigs of RAM, you may not have enough power to work with it.

BTW, why in the world would you want to remove SP3 from XP!!!? It includes vital updates and security patches!

Hi, Tubebuzzer. Canon issued a driver update on this camera on October 3. Have you already installed that update? If not, it might be worth a try. HTH!
