One of my favorite shortcuts when I used a Mac was to hold down the Option key when double-clicking on a file or folder--the result would be to cause the underlying drive window to immediately close, thereby reducing clutter.
Is there a similar shortcut for PCs?

Depends on which version of Windows, George.
Windows 7 has a number of shortcuts for hiding clutter on your desktop.
One way to hide all windows except one on Windows 7, for instance, is to just click on that window's header and shake!

Thanks for the reply, Steve. I have Win7 Home Premium, and what I get with the shake is a smaller IE9 window or a smaller drive window. I'm looking for a keyboard shortcut that will allow me to open a file or folder while simultaneously closing the window of the drive that contains that file or folder. As it's the Opt key on the Mac, I thought the Alt key on the PC would work, but it doesn't.

I saw it only just now, Chuck. I've used both that one and the Windows Key plus the Tab key to scroll through my open windows, but like U2's Bono, "I still haven't found what I'm looking for."

Open a folder - press Alt (you will get a menu at the top of the window.) Select Tools > folder options. The dialogue box will allow you to choose the default behaviour (open in single/multiple window(s))
Whatever you choose pressing <Ctrl> whilst double clicking forces the other behaviour. So if folders normally open in separate windows <Ctrl> makes them use the same window and vice versa.

Thanks for the reply, Chris. I am familiar with that dialogue. But with the Mac, the folder would open in a single window--and that window would simultaneously close as the folder opened, leaving only the opened folder; or, if a document rather than a folder was double-clicked, then only the document would remain opened. It was very cool to watch that window disappear into the distance like a 100%->0% keyframed image.
