Backup Software and NAS

Postby John 'twosheds' McDonald » Mon Feb 13, 2012 3:19 am

Having been a long time user of Acronis I ditched it over a year ago and began using the backup/restore facility in Win 7. I recently purchased a Synology NAS and have been looking for some new backup software and have found this:-

http://www.macrium.com/

Does anyone here have any experience of Reflect? Any other software recommendations to consider?

The NAS supplied software for backup - Data Replicator 3 - runs like a dog on my system and the Synology forum is littered with queries and complaints about the slow speed of operation. In my case it had taken 27 hours backing up my system drive before I stopped it. It would likely have taken another 10 hours to complete from my estimation of where the progress bar was!!

EDIT: I have downloaded the trial version of Reflect Pro and will post back when I have had a chance to try it.

I don't know how you feel about using Chinese software. Some people object to it on principle. But I've found a couple of apps by EaseUS that are free or low-cost and perform excellently.

Check out EaseUS Todo Backup Free. It's very easy to use and it does a quick, efficient back-up. (I also used it to clone my hard drive when I moved my C drive to a larger hard drive and it performed flawlessly!)

Thanks Steve. I have no problems with Chinese software - at least for that which I use!. Going to the EaseUS site now.

Had a brief look at EaseUS backup products but they wouldn't let me configure to back up to my NAS. :(

Apologies as my post immediately above is misleading.

I contacted EaseUS and they very quickly responded and enabled me to make progress. Whilst the EaseUS free version is OK it has some features missing that I need, so my option was the paid version. But that was exactly the same situation with Reflect - I needed the paid version to get some of the features that I needed.

So, on balance, I will likely run with Reflect, mainly because it appears to be a slightly more polished product.

As some of you may recollect, I had been an advocate of Acronis for a long time but finally gave it up on it about a year ago, so I am pleased that I have finally a suitable replacement. :-D

I love Macrium Reflect - especially it being English. I was so pleased with their support over Easter a few years ago I mailed them a thank you that has been quoted in their testimonials section since (appears as N.Hind UK)
Cheers,
