USB 8GB Issues?

Postby scotty331 » Mon Jan 09, 2012 10:31 pm

Hey everyone (: This is my first post :-
So.
This is where my problem happens.
I have a .avi video file on my computer that is 4.6 gb.
So, being the smart guy I am, I ran out and got an 8gb flash drive to put this file on so I could watch it on my PS3.
When I come home, and put the flash drive in, and it works like a charm.
...Until I try to put the 4gb file on the 8gb flash drive.
I get this error (being a new member, I cant post pictures.. Message me for its link.)
How can i fix this?

Just a wild guess: your flash drive may be formatted as FAT32, which has a 4GB file size limit. You'll need to reformat it as NTFS if you want to put larger files on it. Go to My Computer, right-click the flash drive, and select "format". Choose NTFS and the "quick format" option. This will erase all data on the drive, so be sure to make a copy of anything you don't want to lose before starting the process.

Don't expect to be able to use the flash drive on a MAC if you reformat to NTFS, you wont' be able to.
I use flash drives formatted FAT32 to transfer clips between a PC and one of the companies I do work for, they only use MACs. Jack is correct, after formatting the drive NTFS you will be able to fit files larger that 4GB, but you also lose the compatibility between PCs and MACs, just FYI :)

No, it is totally 8gb, and it is a NTFS format.
It just isn't allowing me to put any files over 4gb on it, But I can put 8gb worth of files on it. (as long as those combined files don't include a file over 4gb)

The only reason for that to happen is that the drive is formatted FAT32.
Have you checked in Windows Computer Manager?
All of the flash drives that I have seen are formatted FAT32, so they will work with Windows or MAC.
Unless you reformatted the drive it will still be FAT32.

The best thing you can do is to format the drive again and make sure it is NTFS.
