Wide Angle Adaptors

Wide Angle AdaptorsPresently on holiday with Mrs twosheds in Sicily, where we are doing the tourist bit with camera ever at the ready.
A difficulty is that a number of the (tourist) sites that we have visted have had small interiors and, using the standard lens on my camcorder (Sony HVR-A1) at its widest setting, I can not get enough coverage of the room interiors. So the idea occurs to me that acquiring a wide angle adaptor might be a sensible investment. Before spending my hard earned cash I thought I would ask if anyone here has any experince of wide angle adaptors they could share that will help guide me. My current favourite is the Sony VCL-HG0737X. Thanks in advance for any input. AMD Ryzen 3900x 12C/24T, ASUS x570 mobo, Arctic Liquid Freezer ll 280, Win11 64 bit, 64GB RAM, Radeon RX 570 graphics, Samsung 500GB NVMe 980 PRO (C:), Samsung 970 Evo SSD (D:), Dell U2717D Monitor, Synology DS412+ 8TB NAS, Adobe CS6.
I love these things, John! I got one free with a pack of tapes I bought about 15 years ago and I keep it on my camcorder more often than not. In fact, when I accidentally dropped mine off Stone Mountain in Georgia a few months ago, I was on the internet before sunset ordering a new one.
They really are great, especially for shooting indoors and for giving the illusion of capturing more of the periphery of a scene. Just two caveats: 1) You need to keep your camcorder's zoom lens set to the widest angle or you'll lose focus. 2) The good news is that you can get in real close to people, so you get good sound presence when you're talking to them. The bad news is that sometimes people get intimidated when you've got a camcorder so close to their face! Regardless, I think it's essential equipment for any videographer. Here's where I got mine: http://www.adorama.com/RXQC707.html?sea ... &item_no=4 HP Envy with 2.9/4.4 ghz i7-10700 and 16 gig of RAM running Windows 11 Pro
Here's a video clip that shows how effective the lens can be. With it, you can even videotape yourself!

I would not shoot without a wide angle. I purchased a VCL-HG0737Y it is made of glass and makes the camera really top heavy. And just plain heavy. I then got a VCL-0637H and have not taken it off my Sony HC1 in over a year.

I dont have the VCL-HG0737x but there are some good reports about it on the Sony HDV forum. I have been thinking about getting a wide angle lense as well. It appears you can not get the one Sidd recommends in the UK.
For the VCL-0637H I think the letter H at the end represents the color. Mine is black which I have not seen in the stores as of late. There is a silver version but I do not recall the letter at the end.
I love the wide angle lens. Sidd
Thanks Steve, Sidd and Paul.
Paul, I also tried to find the one Sidd mentioned but all I was able to get was 'no longer available'. Steve, thanks for the links to the clips - are you going to post the full recipe for Sunday Sauce or do we have to work it out for ourselves? I looked up the UK link that you provided to find the suppliers and the prices listed were a lot less than the Sony adaptor I have been looking at. Interesting to note that the UK price is about US$46 compared to the Adorama price of about US$18 - rip off Britain again. Sidd, you mentioned that the 0737 was heavy. Was that in comparison to the 0737? Thanks again. Still holidaying with Mrs twosheds so I'll get onto this when we return to the UK. What I should have said was 'Was this in comparison to the 0637!' John, I've presumptiously posted my Sunday Sauce recipe in the Water Cooler area. Please help yourself!
And let's see how the response goes. If there's interest, maybe we can share a few more. If not, I may just pull it down and hide my head in shame. Meanwhile, anything I can do to rescue people from the horrors of Ragu and the Olive Garden, will make this a better world, IMHO. Yes John,
VCL-HG0737Y is approx twice the size of the VCL-0637H. If you are using a tripod there is no issue, but I like to "roam" and it makes the beast quite heavy. Sidd
Just a brief update on this.
Steve, thanks for the recipe - I haven't tried it yet but is has been copied onto my PC for use in the near future. I managed to get a VCL-0637H off eBay. I'll provide a further update when it arrives and I have been able to try it out. I think you will like it. Also, you might check your camcorder to see if it has a wide angle setting in the menu. I have a Sony HC1 and there is a camcorder setting for attaching a wide angle lens.

Re: Wide Angle daptorsey I was wondering, because as we all know sony is a very expensive brand, are there any generic lenses that offer the same flexibility or should i just go for the Sony, thanks very much for any input (( Edited by Ron : removed spam link ))
Re: Wide Angle AdaptorsYes, time I got a wide-angle lens for my HC1... I would be interested in any feedback.
