Whassamatta Steve? Don't you read SciFi?

The crystal lattice datacube - appears in lots of stories. Holds tremendous amounts of data, including personalities.

I am just waiting to download my personality into a datacube to haunt my family for future generations!

Well, I've been told I have the personality of a box of rocks. Is that the same thing?

I think Bob means Crystal Lettuce. The kind you buy at the grocery store. It has tera gigs of memory and you can eat it too.

No, that was Krystal and you are confusing it with water cooled processors...

I am sure that whatever the format, our grandkids will laugh at us when we tell them how cutting edge we were.

(Apologies in advance......)

But what about di-lithium crytals?

Fully agree with you there Bob, about the compression issue.

Don't forget about tapping into sub-space for power and quick transport. And there's always wormholes, but those can be a bit tricky to keep stable. I am sure, though, if we can use Windows, we can probably handle it.

Forget the science fiction. Real progress is being made in quantum memory.

Here's the deal:

once time travel has been perfected, there'll be no need for any of this memory stuff. Want to see that trip you took to Hawaii 10 years ago? Just hop in the time traveler and experience it first-hand again.
Dell XPS 8500 desktop w/ Intel i7-3770 CPU @ 3.4ghz / 22 gigs RAM / Radeon HD7570 1g dedicated video memory/ PrEl 11 & 9 / Photoshop and Illustrator CS5 / After Effects CS4 / Olympus OM-D E-M5 DSLR (1080i HD video)

Time is money, life is change.

I think that time travel has something to do with the 'Flux Capacitor', just remember that you can't run into yourself in the past or it screws up the 'space-time continuum'.

Anyway, I can hardly wait

I think that the brain will be the ultimate storage device.

Muvipix will sell downloadable memory themes (at a discount of course) the new and improved brain video contest will have its detractors because some brains are bigger faster stronger.

And if Mr Gates has his way we will have to shutdown and reboot along the way. Ahhh the future.

Great article John

But since our brain needs to be exercised to stay in good shape, I wonder if in the long run we end up doing ourselves a disservice because we cannot remember anything unless aided by our digital memories.

Aside from all the conspiracy theories, not exercising our brains might do more harm in the long run and our brains start to regress.

Not to mention that we might be disinclined to have any inspiration for anything because when we review our digital memory we find out it was a bit more plain than what our brain remembered.

Remember, back in the 60s and early 70s, there was that commercial encouraging people to exercise because, they warned, otherwise in the future we will only be heads -- doing lots of thinking but at the mercy of the robots who would carry us around.

(Yes, it was weird -- but this was the 60s, after all!)

So if we now are growing lazy about thinking too, what's that leave?
