The Canon HV series are probably the most popular HDV format camcorders on this forum! I think you'll be very happy with the purchase.

Considering the alternative is an HV20, 30 or 40 starting around $800 I would say that is a pretty good deal :)
I don't know how much the features changed between the HV10 and the HV20 however.
1. Thinkpad W530 Laptop, Core i7-3820QM Processor 8M Cache 3.70 GHz, 16 GB DDR3, NVIDIA Quadro K1000M 2GB Memory.

2. Cybertron PC - Liquid Cooled AMD FX6300, 6 cores, 3.50ghz - 32GB DDR3 - MSI GeForce GTX 960 Gaming 4G, 4GB Video Ram, 1024 Cuda Cores.

From camcorderinfo.com:
The HV10 ($999 MSRP) is not just a pocket-sized HV20; it’s a missing some key features that put the HV20 in a separate class. For one, both camcorders have the same 1/2.7” CMOS sensor and Digic DVII processor, but the gain appears to have been boosted this year in low light, giving it an arguably better picture. The addition of the 24P mode gives the HV20 a huge advantage, more than doubling the sensitivity. That’s not the only major upgrade. The addition of a headphone jack and mic jack add another level of professionalism to the experience. And despite our complaints regarding the HV20’s slim zoom toggle, it’s still better than the HV10’s. For $100 more, you get a lot more with the HV20. It wouldn’t make sense to go for an HV10 unless you absolutely have to impress your friends by randomly pulling a camcorder out of your pocket and passing it around to gain points with everyone.

I'd be skeptical about a "new" HV10, since that model hasn't been manufactured in a few years. You'd be better off looking for a used HV20 for around the same price, and be sure you're buying from a reputable vendor or retailer; there are a lot of seemingly credible online vendors that are really just well-run scams offering too-good-to-be-true deals. If you can afford it, B&H sometimes marks down the HV30 into the $600 range on sale, and they almost always have Canon Vixia HD camcorders of one kind or another in their used outlet. Today they have an HF-100 and HF-10 for under $500 each, if you don't mind shooting HD to memory card instead of tape.

I think you'll be happier with a newer model anyway. Keep an eye on the consumer camcorders for sale in the Used Video dept. at www.bhphotovideo.com (be sure to use the link at www.chuckengels.com so Muvipix gets credit for the sale). They are one of the most reputable and reliable online retailers catering to thousands of pros and amateurs alike; their used inventory changes frequently, and they inspect all used equipment before it gets sold.
